W211 E63 whine at start up
Hi all,
Have anybody experienced a whining sound when starting the engine up in very cold weather? My car has started doing that for 5-10 seconds in the mornings. Only happens when it is really cold outside. Here is the video:

Any ideas what it could be? I am thinking serpentine belt pulleys are the culprit, but not sure.

Do you mean airmatic pump? Or what is an airpump? No check engine lights. The noise comes from the front of the engine, I think, but I might be wrong about it. I opened the trunk and thought it was coming from the front.

Not airmatic compressor. Should be something like part number: 0001405985 I believe it's something (not super essential) related to emissions. AFAIK you can disable it via STAR. Don't quote me on that though.

My car made that same noise twice a few weeks ago. I told my mechanic and he's pretty sure it's a pulley. Both times the car had been parked out side with cooler weather for hours.

Do you think it is time to replace it? Since the noise is only present when it is cold I am not sure whether it is worth spending money.

If it is a pulley, Better to replace it now rather than later when it locks up and damages other things. It shouldn't makes noise at all, cold or hot.
Best to pull your belts loose and spin each pulley by hand and see if they are bad.
I had a aftermarket one come apart idling in front of my shop door and mine wasn't making noise like yours. I shut it off before anything else was damaged.

I'd check power steering, your pulleys, and they secondary air injection pump. The SAI pump can actually be disabled. It is there to blow warm air thru your exhaust to heat up your catalytic converters faster. Are you getting any codes or CELs?
