Gas smell OUTSIDE the car after fillup, not inside....???
I've read all about the gas smell inside the car after filling up with gas issue with the fuel pumps. That's not what I have. My garage smells like gas when I come home after filling the car. The inside of the car really doesn't smell. I looked for drips, I see nothing. I don't overfill - the pump clicks off and that's it, I pull the nozzle out and stop. Once the gas goes or a few days goes by down a bit the smell in the garage stops. Any ideas on this one?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I'm guessing that is not covered under the extended warranty terms on the fuel pumps, correct? The car as a whole was under warranty at that time?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Mine did the exact same thing you're describing. When we pulled the rear seat bottoms there was some fuel pooling. The dealership replaced the whole tank for me.

Mine too. There are photos of it floating around on here. 2003 is no longer covered but you are all good. Pull the back seat and inspection covers 6x 8mm bolts I seem to remember.

Thanks guys. I'll have to schedule the service. I hope I can manage the dealer so they don't do a bunch of extra work that isn't covered. On a side note, (I guess I'm sort of hijacking my own thread) how does the extended warranty on the SBC pump work? Do you need to have the warning light on for them to replace it, or will they replace one that is functioning but has never been replaced? Hoping I can have them do that while I'm in there as well. Thanks again!

A lot of people on this site throw around "extended warranty" and "recall" like they're interchangeable terms. They 100% are not.

I'm taking it in for the gas issue today. Lets see how it goes, I'll let you all know. I'll fill it with gas at the station just next to the dealer before I drive it in.

New owner here. Does anyone know if this issue affects all years? Is it also covered in Germany, or only USA? How would I go about checking if it had already been rectified, as the previous owner worked for Mercedes and might have had this done already. Hard to tell for sure from the German service records.

Well, just got the call from the service advisor at North Houston M-B - it is the fuel tank that is leaking, all the necessary parts are in stock, and they expect that I should get the car back later today. All in all about as good as can be asked for.

When you get the car back it’s also a good idea to verify that the dealer installed the fuel pump adapter cable. Here’s Barry’s link for more info.

Can anyone confirm what date the 15 years is calculated from?
Is it delivery date?
pre-delivery inspection?
model year car?
I've got an '04 that was delivered on 10.30.03 with it's inspection on 2.10.04.
I have no signs of a leak but wondering if anyone has gotten this fixed preventatively
