This is like deja vu all over again. The M5 will be a great car, but most people on this board will prefer the E55 simply because of the total package. Yes, the M5 will handle better, but 90+% of owners/drivers of these vehicles will never push these cars to the handling limits to differentiate significantly between the two.
Having tracked the E55, I can say it was clearly front-heavy, had excessive understeer, and was a heavy pig. The M5 will likely be overweight too but better balanced. I thoroughly enjoy the E55 on a road course but if I wanted a sports car, then a GT3 or a Z06 would be in order, not an M5.
Neither the M5 or E55 are sports cars. They are fast luxo-cruisers. MB need not change their focus for AMG, but rather shed a few pounds, work on weight distribution a little, and add a manual tranny. As for the hp escalation, it's a win-win situation. Words that I live by everyday-"Enough is never enough."

Two E55's at the same track. Funny, I never got passed by an M5. Did you Chill? Come to think of it, I dont remember seeing any there at all. Maybe they were at home, on the internet or reading magazine articles.
