My transmission just toasted...

Yesterday when i was driving all the sudden no shifting, keep going to neutral. When I wait it until cool down I can only drive 1 mile then that's it.
No any sign of transmission problem at all. I did 3 times transmission services in 10 years (about 50K miles) so I take care of my car.
I can't believe no sign and just fail. It has only 118K miles now. My mechanic told me the car has too much power that's why. Many people has way more power than me but I guess i am really unlucky.

I can hear the whining sound, guessing is the pump failing and the torque converter is no good. Anyways, getting a used tranny for $1K + labor.
Is better to rebuild or just buy used ?

Thanks.

You have to do a cost benefit analysis, is it cheaper to rebuild your transmission or buy a used one. Rebuilding it, you know that new parts are going in, and that it will be reliable. With a used transmission, you don't know the history, or if it has any existing issues. So it is up to you, as for me, I would simply rebuild if the price was right.
Rebuilt for $1k YES
Used for $1k NO

Did you try changing your tranny fluid or anything else before letting a shop hit you with a new tranny? I had the same thing happen. It mostly would start after getting warm, drive through or car wash etc. All of a sudden popping into neutral. If I pull over and shut if off for a while I could drive a bit to limp it home. Happened several times. I found the tranny fluid was burnt up, and the tranny cooler fan fuse was blown. I flushed about 12 quarts through the tranny and got the fan running right and haven't had an issue since (about three months ago as well as two trips to the drag strip).

Any ways, sorry no good input on to rebuild or replace.

Good luck brotha.

Always rebuild over buying someone else's second hand problem.

Thread title made me laugh....

Take it for a real diagnosis before someone just tosses a random transmission in.

Also laughable is how you are shocked that an over 10 year old car that also has over 100k on the transmission could fail. How is that hard to wrap your head around?? But also make sure it's diagnosed properly. Could just be the conductor plate just as likely.

Many of E55 has more mileage and still with original tranny. The tranny pump was making a loud whining noise and the torque converter is also bad at this point.
I will change a conductor plate and ask my mech to check the tranny cooler fan fuse. Anyone know where and which one is the fuse ?

Thank you.

I told my mechanic to change conductor plate, filter, new fluid... and now the car is fine.
Just don't know how long will it last. Is it normal symptom to total fail to drive when conductor plate ?
The car just stop shifting when it was heat up. No previous symptoms at all.
I think I will still rebuild the tranny. Anybody can recommend a good rebuild shop in Southern California ?
Thanks !

Although W211 E63s are infamous for head bolt issues, nobody seems to talk enough about transmission issues on E55. Those old 5 speed automatics may break close to that mileage. I had E350 with 5 speed tranny. I think it is called 729.6 or smth like that. Despite taking excellent care of the car and doing tranny service on time the transmission failed on me. I ordered used one from ebay - also would shift rough. In the end I sold the car for cheap.
I guess mercedes improved trannies with facelift but screw up head bolts.

722.6, it is generally considered pretty reliable. The early 722.9 had plenty of issues including TCU failure.

The 722.6 is very strong and is behind some very fast cars. but an electrical issue can fail any transmission !!

Mine did the same thing just from being low on fluid. It's been fine for years since.

After picked up my car last Friday drove about total 40 miles and my car runs well as before. I did not WOT... maybe in few more weeks I might try how the car will react.
Changed the conductor plate and fluid and now works fine... I guess it's the electrical issues.
