Fuel smell in Summer
Hi guys,
I have been smelling fuel inside the cabin recently.
The fuel smell always begins in the summer, hot days, driving or in traffic for 2+ hours. I had a 03 E55 and my current 05 E55 both have/had the exact same issue. Fuel pumps and senders dry.
I don't know how the fuel tank system works, but im sure it looks like, fuel gets too hot and fuel vapor is trapped inside the tank increasing the pressure, smells starts to creep inside the cabin. It also causes the gas pump shutting off if you are refueling.
With the old 03 E55, I've changed the fuel pumps, fuel sending unit, charcoal canister (behind the rear wheel), fuel tank, fuel pressure dampener o-ring, with no success.
The fuel pumps has been changed a year ago on the E55 05. I do like these engines and I don't want to get rid of it and switch to these new 63s because of this annoying issue !!
Any insights is really appreciated.

Fuel leaks are very common at the top of the fuel tank around the fuel pump modules. There are multiple reasons for the leak (cracks in the pump module, cracks in the tank, warped tank, etc). The recommended fix is to replace the complete tank assembly (including new pumps, etc). There is an extended warranty on this (15 years) but it looks like you are a bit too late for that. Assuming you are out of warranty, I would first try replacing the seal rings and if that doesn't work, try the pump module and filter module (new seals again).

There is an MB dealer recall. Do a search.
