Ok...thanks. The 2009 engine that's going in it has about 90k miles and obviously want to do the head bolts sooner than later. Will see if they can take pictures of the bolts that come out.
It’s really not as bad as you think. Just LITERALLY replaced my engine last week (I posted a forum on engine as well) and just replaced it. Cost? Yard wanted $3,100 we negotiated and came to $2,600 E55k engine with 64k miles and 3 year warranty. Labor at my friends indy shop, $400 bucks. All in all I get a warranty engine installed and ready to roll for $3k and Im in Cali. All I can say is if you want to sit and cry, sit and cry. If not get up and hustle for a good engine for the best price by posting on engine websites so they can submit offers to you. Call around as much indy shops as you can and grab labor quotes. Shout out to FCP Euro as I purchased a boat load of supplies to bring the car straight out of the factory. Next up, keep the original engine parts, get em clean, and start selling them. Good post. You can pretty much get any M113 or 156 from any model and transfer the model specific parts across. Even a DIYer could finish it over a couple of weekends.
ya, looks like im going to be doing an engine after all. just trying to find the right one,. hopefully im not getting my self into a can of worms.... ill keep y'all posted.
Any solid write ups on best way to get the engine out? i found a detailed you tube video of a guy who did it in his driveway, but he removed the entire front end, and engine and trans in one piece.
I’d pick up a complete E500 engine at your favorite junkyard, throw all the M113K accessories on and sell at full price. Someone else’s problem lol.

OP, Grab a 113k Motor from the scrap yard. if you need help finding one i can contact our dismantler for you. You will be able to sell many of the components off of your original engine to recoup most of the costs.

CLS55 is too nice of a car to junk. Weren't they only made one year??
It's a simple as disconnecting everything between the engine and car until you only have engine mounts left. Drain all fluids, remove radiator to protect it, take out trans and engine as one from the top. Procedure and torque specs will be in WIS.
Im very mechanically inclined, been wrenching on my toys, friends toys, cars etc for 20 years. Done a few motors and transmissions on friends bmws in the past as well. One thing i learned is that there is a smart way and hard way to do things. im trying to do this with out removing or disconnecting things i dont need to. at this time this is the only detailed video i have found, but the guy removes his entire front clip, and motors/trans in one piece in his drive way. I do have a lift, and would like to only remove the things that are necessary, and as quickly as possible. Anyone know of a detailed write up or you tube video other than this one?
Sorry this has happened to you and have to deal with it. This is honestly my biggest fear of my E63; I baby it, replace parts as needed as proactively; think I have everything covered, and then bam (knock on every kind of wood out there) engine craps out. When you are busy with work, wife & kids, you don't want to have to worry about this and reliability is key (as can be for an AMG). No you shouldn't get a Corolla, these should be better with better longevity. But again they are what they are.
ya it sucks, i love this car, i get compliments on it everywhere i go, nobody believes its an 06 lol. dumped loads of time and money into it, mid boggled that the engine grenaded itself out of the blue. i wish i could say it was from lack of maintenance or neglect , but i only used parts from pelican or fcp euro, just did new k&ns and spark plugs 10k miles ago, only premium fuel, only 0w40 and fleece MB filter, every 3-5k miles, stored in winter, maybe seen rain a dozen times. Did i drive my car to hard or something?
I definitely was addicted to the cars power, and drove the car hard, but hell ,i know people with all sorts of v8 cars. Vettes, hellcats, demons, porches, etc etc, that beat the snot of there cars and have more mileage, and 0 issues... Guess i will find out when i start to tear into it. im guessing the oil seal between sumps, and or injector ?

Good thread but sorry for the reason. I'll watch with interest as I'm looking at buying either an E55 or 63, both with under 50k. Interestingly the E63's here are cheaper than the earlier E55's.
If you really love the car, get rid of the K&N's. They let in fine grit. You will find evidence between the SC snout and the SC bearings. Not why your engine blew, but it will cause SC and ring wear. Would be great if you got the new engine ahead of time and put a new oil pump tensioner in it, along with an oil pump pickup tube o-ring. Maybe pin a 180 crank pulley on there while you're at it. Then if you ever sell it you can charge a premium. Those would be a big deal if you put them in the ad.
when it’s all back together check fueling and tuning. make sure both pumps are running correctly (forward) and i’d also find someone to retune. #1 cause of death on these motors is poor tuning and/or fuel starvation.
Wow, painful read and sorry this happened to you. I tend to agonize over a task versus just rolling up my sleeves and getting after it, once I start I always say it wasn't that bad, why did I waste so much time over the analysis paralysis. Anyway we hope you save the CLS and drop in a replacement engine. My recommendation is to keep the mods limited to exhaust and a tune you can trust, big pulleys and questionable tunes have sent many M113K to the grave. I'm over 10 years of ownership with my Kleemann K2 set-up and its solid as a rock and I'm confident in the car, the most soul snatching feeling is having a car (especially an expensive one) where your confidence is low.
