downshifting smoothness

downshifting smoothness
going about thirty-forty mph in drive and just pushing down a little bit gets the rpms up and the car shifts into third, even though I just wanted a little more go. It works fine manually, but i wondered if this downshifting to third from fifth at those speeds is unavoidable.
