Weird high pitch noise
Weird high pitch noise
I was driving the other day & I had my windows down when all of a sudden I notice a high pitch noise. I didn’t think it was my car at first but it definitely was, it sounds like it’s coming from the back of the car maybe like a brake pad problem but I wonder if this is drive-able. Any ideas to what the problem can be will help!
The sound seems to be related to the tire rotation.
Could be as simple as your rotors and brakes needing to be replaced. Or a wheel bearing.
Rotors and brakes are easy to check even with the wheels on you just ned to get down there and put your hand on the rotor (when cool) and feel if there is a lip around the top of the rotor.
This is usually a good sign that they are out of spec, and your brakes are probably worn down to the "wear sensor" metal that produces that noise.
Rear brakes on these cars are hard to replace as the nut holding the caliper on is a PITA. I had to go to a shop to get my rears replaced.

As for how long you can drive around like that.... you can drive around like that forever. Just depends if you want to stop or not
I'd go visually inspect each rotor. If you haven't replaced them since owning the car, chances are they are toast.
Not sure if you have an E55 or E63. If you need to save some cash, I can vouch for the one piece front rotors working like a charm. The two piece Brembo rotors up front are super light but extremely expensive.
Go inspect them and take some photos and share here.
