I can see that the boot was ripped. So it was pretty obvious.
Another sign would be grease on the boot or a lot of dirt/mud caked on the boot (dirt sticking to the grease that's come out).
May need to turn the wheel out so you can see better.

Ok gotcha. Thanks. I've taken a very close look at all the bushings and joints. I do much of the work myself. I replaced front brakes (wow - expensive rotors), I changed the front thrust arms, and the sway bar end links. I've been up close to all other components and they really looked ok to me.

right there with ya, I do everything myself to.
I ended up going the one piece rotor route to save some cash when I first bought the car. Got them through FCP Euro, so may do a warranty exchange soon. Also looking at maybe upgrading to the two-piece rotors since they are so much lighter!
May find another E63 owner that's looking to save some cash and give them my one piece and go brembo.
If anyone see's this give a holler LOL.
I did the exact same as you and ultimately it was the shocks. which is a really $$$.

I actually broke down and got the Brembo rotors for the fronts. Just so you know, they are freaking heavy as well. I have rotors and pads for the rear but after checking them, the pads have better than 50% of their life left. I jumped the gun on that purchase but those were not nearly as expensive. Are you in LA, CA?

The brembos definitely aren't light. But they are literally 1/3 the weight of the one piece.
Just moved to Seattle last September, likely headed back to Cali by the end of the year.... definitely was a pandemic pivot for work LOL.

Yea def!
I've considered selling a few times, but these cars are getting harder to find and I really think they will be a modern classic in 10yrs.
Also with all the work I've done to this thing I will never recoup the money put in, and I got it for a steal. If I don't drive it often, I'd rather put it in storage as a fair weather toy than sell it off.
Now I just have to convince my wife that we need this, our G55 overlander and a Porsche 911 C4S... she doesn't drive LOL.

MBWorld Fanatic!
My E63 front rotors are nothing compared to the weight on my X5M front rotors. Now those things are f****** heavy as measure 15.6" in diameter.
