M156 MLS head gaskets - how clean is clean enough
I am in the middle of replacing the head bolts after finding coolant in the oil of my 2009 E63 AMG.
I know that I need to get the head really clean and the block really clean, so the MLS gaskets will seal properly.
I know that I should not use anything other than wood or plastic to scrape on the aluminum.
I see that many manufacturers are also issuing notes to stay away from Roloc-like pad or bristle disc to clean with.
This page has me all concerned:
https://www.holmanparts.com/technica...face-cleaning/
What am I supposed to use?
I have tried brake cleaner, varsol [mineral spirits], and even Permatex 80645
I still have some small, black lines on the head and block that just don't want to come off.

This place is a joke.
I've had good luck with a small brass or stainless brush (looks like a toothbrush with metal bristles) and brake cleaner. Use some lint-free towels for final cleaning and/or compressed air. Do not use scotchbrite pads or wheels, as the debris acts like sandpaper and can score the cylinders.
