Nice finds in the parts catalog
Folks, really nice stuff on the engines in the parts catalog. If you have a couple of spare hours, I recommend you start here:

and then peruse information about your engine to your heart's contentment.
Little bits of info such as there was a crankshaft and ring gear change very early in the W211 E55 model. The M156 engine went through three iterations of the upper oil pan and six iterations of the timing case. Could be important mixing and matching parts when pulling from a salvage yard.
