I’ve only owned my brilliant silver (744) E55 for a year but noticed from when I bought it that the rear passenger side door and fender color was a bit off from the rest of the car (yellowing tint to it). It was only noticeable in direct sunlight and had originally planned to get it fixed at a later date. Fast forward to now and the clear coat has started to flake off on the passenger door.
it seems that the rear passenger door and quarter panel were painted, nothing on the carfax, and the painter used cheap clear coat. The paint that’s showing underneath appears to be the correct color.
The car has 160k on it, I got a quote of $1,200 for painting the door and quarter panel from a reputable shop and a quote of 4,000 to wrap the entire car in the same color. I’m planning on keeping the car and have been slowly replacing parts over the last few months
would it better to paint the door & quarter panel or just wrap the entire car ?
I would say you should get the door and quarter panel painted done right. While they are doing that if there are any other paint blemishes you want touched up this would be a good time to do it.
I would also say repaint, and not wrap it. Just say you've spent $4K to have it wrapped, and several years from now, you've decided to remove the wrap, your still stuck with the door blemishes. Take my advice and have professional color matched and painted.
