E55 spins both rear tires, E500 spins one - how come?

Curious, but on snow/ice my E55 hooks brilliantly with snow tires - but when I swap those SAME exact wheels/tires over to the E500, only one tire spins causing the car to go no where and get stuck. What gives?
From what I'm aware of, the E55 and E500 both have open differentials (disappointingly) so I would like to think the LOWER horsepower vehicle should do better in the snow/ice.. once a tire begins to spin, an open differential keeps sending power to the spinning wheel. I also believe these cars are supposed to come equipped with an "electronic LSD" where it stops the spinning tire (via braking of that one/specific wheel) in order to send power to the tire that isn't spinning. Generally speaking, more horsepower/torque is supposed to result in crappier drive-ability in the snow, and it doesn't take much power to spin on ice/snow - so I'd assume power is an irrelevant factor for my particular situation.

Maybe a previous owner installed an LSD? I spin one wheel all day long in summer, in the dry with high performance tyres. The traction control is pretty archaic compared to modern cars which is the only reason I am hesitant to get an LSD and find myself accidentally drifting.
