Wouldn't my V1 go off if the cop has laser? I thought it did although it would be too late. I understand the entire light array goes off and you're nailed. Mine did not go off in any way. Silent. He was just sitting in his car down in the median waiting for "sitting ducks". I thought I was protected. Not so. Now will be looking for an alternative radar detector AND a laser jammer. Who has the best jammer?

not necessarily. cops aim laser at parts of your car that will reflect the laser back. front license plate, front headlight, etc. your V1 is most likely mounted to the top of your visor or high up the windshield. the chance of the laser (which has about a 3-4' diameter, depending on how far your car is from the cop) reflecting a small portion back up to the top of your windshield is not so high. all the radar / laser detectors can detect laser, but you'd have to place the V1's sensor right down in front of the car or behind for it to be as effective as it could be.

thats why i opted to get a separate laser jamming system. one that detects and jams from where the cop most likely will be targeting my vehicle. remember, this is all a statistics game. we're just upping the chance of being able to detect we're being targeted.

but the way state/local governments work, for them to add another category that says "laser" instead of "radar" into their accounting systems or computer systems (trust me, i install them for these folks), and then train all their people to use it (from cops to the paperwork processors) is so cost prohibitive that my dollar bet is the person above got hit with laser, and the cop wrote "radar" on the ticket.

as for www.radartest.com, i've read on other websites that its sponsored by BEL, so it would make sense it really promotes their stuff.

we'll see though. i'm going to test both the blinder and the lidatek and post results. as for the V1, i've tested it for the past 4 weeks and while it does get pretty crazy and spastic in cities (like downtown San Francisco), it has worked incredibly well on highways and in the suburban town i live in (detected our regular speed trap from a mile away, over hilly roads).

For years I was staunch supporter of the V1, but after using the 8500 I feel its a better product... for now...
The current V1 has been around for a LOOONG time without a software update. There are 10 reviews that show the 8500 beating the V1, yet the V1 doesnt get changed or updated. Plus Mike Valentine always complains about how the tetsing is not fair. If all the other detectors are tested in the same way then how is it NOT fair?
The Escort products that came out after the last aluminum Passport were flat out garbage. Valentine came along and nearly put them out of business. Then Bel bought Escort and put a ton of cash into R&D and finally started producing good products. Since then Valentine has drug their feet and held the Car and Drive review as its holy grail for selling detectors. I guess they dont read other reviews or just claim unfairnes in testing.

Personally I like the arrows the V1 has and the bogey counter. In theory it works great, but in the real world its down right annoying. On my daily drive there are areas that ALL the arrows would be lit and Id have a 9 on the bogey meter! In other words the V1 is WAY to sensitive, even in the city mode and the ultra city mode (cant remember what its called?).
Try both and seen which works better for you..
Thanks for the help! I'll definitely look into that. If someone else does the test however, I'll just run off of their results. Either way, thanks for the advice.

When I got my ticket I was running the SRX laser jammer with a V1. The V1 didn't make a peep, but I do know the SRX worked to a degree because the cop said he didnt get a reading until I was really close.
The V1 is soooo dated its not even funny. I was reading the latest Car and Drive and in the Valentine One ad the tout the 2002 test. I cant believe the would qoute a THREE year old test!

Yeah, I saw that recently too and thought that was pretty pathetic.

My K40 works just fine for me. I'd say that it's a bit sensitive at times in Local/City mode but I can live with it. Per the original posting here are the locations for the different components on my car.

I picked mine up on Thursday with the K40 radar and laser diffuser install complete, along with the subs and amp. They mounted the indicator lights on the dash, right below the air vent control dials, and put the sub and radar controls into a custom ashtray location. So far, so good, city mode works great, occasional Walgreens hits, but very accurate

Pics are posted on my album, link below....

Can you completely mute the K-40? I heard the older models you can't (can only turn the volume down) but wasn't sure if the newer models can mute completely?

BTW:
I got a speeding ticket last month while using the Escort 8500 X50. It went off...but not until the cop was right on top of me. I could see him pointing his gun at me by the time the X50 uttered a beep and then it was a full warning. The cop listed it "radar" on the ticket but told me he was using Laser. Then as I was heading home that same night, I turned onto another street (this time doing the speed limit) and saw another cop pointing his gun at me. I waited for my X50 to go off and it did....again while the cop was maybe 25 feet away. Cops here must use laser so I need to look into getting a jammer.

Also, I paid the $25 for...

http://www.ticketassassin.com/

...which so far has given me A LOT of good info that I'm going to use to fight my ticket. There are laws that state an officer has to complete a certain number of training hours to issue tickets and if so, they have to provide proof as well as their equipment has to have documentation that it is in proper working order etc, etc. Lots of good info that hopefully will result in me getting off on a technicality using the Written Not Guilty Plea letter - where the officer has to also write one to contest your letter and if he doesn't, your ticket is dismissed! I'll update everyone as I go.

K40 Radar Detector RL360

Gentlemen,

I have been driving with K40's newest radar detector the RL360. I have posted about it here when I first purchased it late last year and I feel even stronger about it now. The K40 radar detector RL360 is the best radar detector I have driven with. Yes they fixed and improved a lot of things they have also added GPS now so if you want to mark location you can, the quite ride feature is awesome I use it all the time depending on where I am driving. They have also built in a auto mute 3-5 seconds after an encounter it will mute 50% then after 1 minute it will mute completey or you can manually mute it. The cool thing about it any feature is adjustable. From what I paid and what my friends paid they bought theres after mine it will range any where from $1,800 - $2,100 installed a little pricey but you get front and rear radar detection and front and rear laser jamming which is the best you can get.

yeah, old thread, even older now
i'm reading it since i picked up a used Sclass that has K40 with wirless controll. Not sure how good it really is. sometimes it pick things up from no where sometimes doesnt say a beep untill almost by the cop.... Go figure.
But too bat it only has the front radar detector in the bumper. no rear scensor or laser.
Anyone knows if software can be upgraded?

Been using a Bell RX65 for years in the U.S. and Europe (it has an option to switch between European and U.S. bands) it never misses on radar or laser. Also have the latest Blinder laser system which is, quite frankly, phenomenal. Have seen various Valentines and I really don't think they are anywhere close to the top-of-the-line Bell/Escort models. Just my opinion FWIW.

And here's a funny story (I think); I was somewhere in Europe not too long ago and there was an M3 ******* me. Well I was just playing with him (or her) on a stretch that I knew had an automatic laser speed tower. So as I approached the tower in a 60KM zone I picked it up to about 140KM, just enough to get about 6-8 car lengths on the M3. Of course I went by the tower and nothing happened because the Blinder did its job (the RX65 was also screaming) and as I watched in the rear view mirror I saw the RED FLASH as the Bimmer got in range of the tower. I guess that wasn't very nice of me, but I still chuckle about it.

I'm also stuck with an outdated K40 that came with the e55 I purchased last year...what components are upgradeable, if any? I finally just shut it off because all it was doing was telling me where the construction zones were! If it can't even pick up the speed traps on Ohio/Pennsylvania/NJ turnpikes it's pretty useless to me...

I too picking up a 99 E55 with the K40 3000 With the city/Hwy option , It was giving off the two chirp warning when i got it , I called K40. Guy told me it meant the front sensor was either bad or disconnected, I traced the wire and found the front was not connected , So far its working. Its been a week since i fixed it.
i am still feeling it out , It doesn't appear to have as good a range as my Escort 9500ix, but it is working.. Anybody else still using the older k40 ? I also have a V1. I like the V1 for local driving.
