No batteries yet loud sound from engine bay
2004 E55 AMG 200k miles
Hello, I woke up to my AMG making a sound this morning coming from driver side engine bay. Quite loud, with an open window I hear it from 2nd floor. I Disconnected the two batteries. Still there. I’d say it’s kind of a ticking sound but non metallic. I would have thought electrical. Other guess is leaking air from the suspension system but the car hasn’t dropped.
Known facts.
Fuel sending unit has been disconnected for a month. Had an issue right before going out of town, just got back a few days ago.
Washed the car 48 hours ago, because birds love it. It locked and unlocked just fine.
Heard the sound this morning. Wouldn’t unlock with fob, assuming dead battery/ies. I need to find my voltmeter.
There was a tiny pool of water in the right side of the trunk near the battery.
I disconnected both batteries 30 minutes ago, sound still going.
Seems to come from under the fuse tray on driver side of engine compartment.

Problem partially solved.. After disconnecting the batteries, the first thing I checked was if the e55 alarm system had a it's own power source. From what I found online, it didn't... The main battery was at 7 volts. I removed it and put a jumper pack on and the alarm went blaring. I unlocked the car with the fob, and it was fine. I locked it and unhooked the pack, the same sound started up again. Hooked up again and this time left it unlocked. Removed pack and all was fine. Just had to manually lock everything. Not sure what drained the battery, if it was the alarm or the alarm came on after volt droppage as an antitheft security measure. Since the sound went on for hours after disconnecting the batteries, there must be a separate power source for the alarm, right?

The alarm does have its own power source, it's not replaceable and it's inside the alarm itself. After about 15 years that battery fails and you need to replace the alarm siren. Common symptoms are the alarm randomly sounding, your flashers randomly flashing.

I’ve asked around with the neighbors and so far no one heard an actual alarm. So I’m guessing the battery drained to 7v and set off the alarm, that apparently didn’t have enough power to sound normally.
