how often do keyless go fobs go bad?

over the past few years my key fob has been going through batteries faster and faster. yesterday installed new batteries and today the key fob seems dead a day later with new batteries. while driving with keyless go vehicle would state key is not present, then go away, then return. more so lately than in the past, but progressively gotten worse over the years. would take a few months, then turned into 2 months, then 1 months, then the week after. each time with new batteries. now 1 day later.

I'm thinking my key fob is on its way out? oddly, today though, even if the key fob was going out, it was sporadically allowing me to turn the ignition. sometimes just to ACC1 and not allowing to start, other times allowing start. key fob or a failing module somewhere?

thoughts?

I'm in an E55 (my third one) that I bought several years back. Replaced the fob batteries at least three times. I, too, have noticed they tend to go bad far quicker than they should. I throw this all in the "old Benz problems" category, much like 90% of the electrical crap that pops up a few times a year with these cars. My first two E55s had the same thing going on ..

I think I may have found my issue. the slide out battery insert has 4 prongs that I bent outwards to contact better with the case with electronics. seems better now. will report back in a week or so if this was the issue.

my issue didn’t last for months. I had the an issue where the keyless go wouldn’t work at first on occasions. Then the car would tell me battery needs to be replaced. Swapped the batteries and the car told me key not recognized in some instances. Turns out I needed a new key. Had to shell out $460, problem went away.

did you have to get new FOB at dealer? I need a FOB too and my dealer quoted me $1000 for new keyless entry key FOB!

Are there other sources for FOBs programmed to our cars?

Thanks,

Joe

Yes this is from the dealer with keyless go. It’s funny, I called 10 dealers around me. Ranges from $1.3k-$460. Shop around, each dealer puts their mark up on parts.
