Not E55 but some advise needed

Hello, I am about to buy a 96 SL320 however the seller told me when the car is warm, it will not restart the engine. It takes about 10 minutes to cool down then the engine starts.
No codes.

I have 2 experience.
- CPS crank position sensor. Not sure about the R129 SL320 platform but it happened to my E55 few years back so change the CPS.
- Transmission failed. This also happened to my 06 E55 about 4 years ago. When the car is warm the ECU or TCU try to protect the tranny therefore prevent to restart the car until the temp cool down.

How are the chances do you think ? any opinion or advise can help.

Thank you.

There are a number of possible issues. But, I would lean toward a fuel delivery issue. If it has a vacuum controlled pressure regulator it may be leaking internally (pull the vacuum line and see if there is fuel in the vacuum hose) or the fuel pump is on its way out. Check the fuel pressure to see if it is within spec. If it is low time to replace. Fuel pump is not in the tank so easy to access and replace and can be had for less than $100 from online MB dealers sellers. I'd jump at a chance to negotiate the price of the car if the fix is as easy as that. Good luck.

Be aware that many of those cars have the biodegradable wiring harness issues. The cutoff for the engine harness was 11/95 production date. I would look into that before anything else. Lots of the plastic parts in those cars will crumble as well.

+1 price up a replacement engine harness and assume you will need one in the future. I heard they are pretty expensive.

Thank you guys for all the advise. I better don't buy this one. I had a 2001 for 2 years without issue but 96 might not be the best year to have.

Smart move...don't let this happen. He talks all about the harness.

Possible the wiring harness has failed. There are ways to test to see if you have the biodegradable one.

Also, when it's warm and won't start, try the Overvoltage Protection relay. It's under the hood and has a clear plastic door that protects a fuse. When the OVP relay fails it will sometimes stop the car from cranking when warm.
