2004 W211 E55 AMG
New purchase!

Hi everyone,

New here from Australia. I just got my first AMG, an '04 E55 in Melanite Black, with only 89,000km on the odometer when I picked it up. It’s optioned with keyless-go and pano roof.

The reason I got a car almost as old as I am is that my family had an Avantgarde E280, which was my mom's favorite. As a kid, I didn’t really like that car because it didn’t look as 'cool' as the E60 5 Series, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate how beautiful and timeless the W211 is. After selling my 7P Touareg, this was the only car I wanted. Last week I flew to another state to get it and drove it 2 days, 1900kms back.

The car does have some issues since it was sitting for quite a long time. I’m hoping to get some opinions—any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance!
  • The left rear shaft is leaking a tiny bit of oil near the diff. I saw one small drip forming after driving it back for 2000kms. Should I address this ASAP or just monitor it?
  • The rear main seal is leaking/weeping, but I’m not planning to touch it anytime soon since it’s not too bad.
  • The engine idles a bit rough, both hot and cold, might be misfiring a bit. The spark plugs were replaced 3 years/less than 10,000kms ago. I’m planning to use some fuel additives to see if it’s fuel-related due to sitting. Any input on this would be helpful!
  • Both driver and passenger seat lumbar/contour seats don’t hold air and will slowly deflate in about 5 minutes. Where should I start looking into this?
  • The AC doesn’t have any heating. I have already ordered the heater valve and will update on this!
Thanks again!

    • This one is something I think a lot of owners are going to run into sooner or later. My right axel is leaking at the boot and as far as I'm aware the replacement from mercedes is either hard to get or not possible anymore. Hopefully someone comes up with a solution.
  • The rear main seal is leaking/weeping, but I’m not planning to touch it anytime soon since it’s not too bad.
    • This one seems daunting but actually pretty straightforward. I just did mine, and I coupled it woth some other "while you're in there" activities to make the labor worth it. I would say monitor it over time but no huge rush to get it done unless it starts to really leak... Mine was starting to pool in the plastic under-cover between oil changes.

    • Inspect your engine mounts; they do a surprisingly good job of damping engine vibrations and you will have a rough idle if they're collapsed. They're fluid filled and eventually start to leak. When my last set went bad my idle was super rough and it had me concerned something else was going on.
  • Both driver and passenger seat lumbar/contour seats don’t hold air and will slowly deflate in about 5 minutes. Where should I start looking into this?
    • There are a few threads here on this, (one fairly recently by kevin14 if I remember correctly), and the long and short of it is the air bladders become leaky, and either need to be replaced or repaired. Sometimes the air lines develop a leak, but most of the failure modes I've seen are related to the bladders. Seat cover has to come off to R&R them.
  • The AC doesn’t have any heating. I have already ordered the heater valve and will update on this!
    • Yup. Should be a straightforward replacement.
Thanks again!

It looks some what close to emerald green under the sun or direct light, otherwise it looks black. Its not as light as some of the dark emerald paints nowdays, but at the right angle you can def see the green.

So i got the car serviced first, then all the gaskets near the SC, changed the SC oil, replaced the heater control valve, spark plugs, intake filters and transmission mount and it changed nothing, went to another place and found out my aux water pump is dead, skipped the 010 and went for a amg gt brushless pump with split cooling instead, and we think the left hand side engine mount might be collapsed, planning to order some black series mount next. Stuff that I want to get done next is a transmission service plus diff oil change, and possibly some suspension work, been hearing a lot of noises when going over bumps n etc.
