E55 Supercharger bypass valve position

E55 Supercharger bypass valve position

Just a quick question - had the throttle body off to change the fuel pressure dampener (pressure was fluttering) so had a peak inside the inlet snout and down to the intercooler core. Should the bypass valve actuator normally be open or closed with everything powered off? Mine is wide open. All looked pretty spotless down there, almost too clean. I can’t remember if this was open or not last time I had the TB off (about 20k miles ago) Have seen a few pictures either way, what’s the norm? Car seemed to drive fine last time which was a few weeks ago but was short and low rpm - I doubt it even got into boost. Thanks in advance

When engine off, key out, that is where it rest's.
And yes it is clean which means you have none or very little oil blow by circulating around so that's good.

'99 and '05 E55 AMG
Supercharger bypass valve is reversed from the throttle plate position. As the throttle plate opens, the bypass valve closes.

Throttle plate 100% closed; bypass valve 100% open.
Throttle plate 50% closed, bypass valve 50% open.
Throttle plate 100% open, bypass valve 100% closed.

The connectors are identical so it is easy to swap them causing all kinds of issues. Mark with tape before disconnecting.

Thanks for the info guys! Figured all was fine but just couldn’t remember how it was. Great tip on the TB connectors what a headache that would be to figure out.
