Rear Shocks- not the air bags

Is there a preventative replacement schedule for the rear shocks? If they start going south what are the symptoms? Mine are original and I was thinking about this today.

'99 and '05 E55 AMG

If leaking oil, replace.
If error messages, possibly replace.
Approaching 250,000 miles so I think it is time to replace mine...

So far, mine seem to respond well compared to "dumb" shock absorbers. Then again, I have never driven an E55 direct off of the show room floor.

I sometimes think they may work but not as they did when new.
