Engine shuts down on Dyno

Anyone experience an engine shut down after about 4500 RPM on 2004 AMG cars? May be related to ESP but maybe not. Even after supposedly being in dyno mode this happens. Happened after a number of dyno runs, the first few of which were successful???? Perhaps their is some type of limiter built into 1 of the computers???

Could be heat related. How are you cooling the engine.

cooling during dyno runs

Fans are blowing and have extra intercooler installed. This only happened after a number of previous dyno runs were made and now happens on the first run on a cool car so something is limiting the RPM that was not activated before. Must be making too much 'real' RWH, torque........

Forum member "Gid E Up" posted a dyno sheet that showed 619 crank hp and it was run all the way up to 6,000rpm I believe (kleeman did the dyno). So, that must mean that our cars can be dyno'd properly.

Any chance it is something in the programming that is causing it to shutdown? Did you check for any trouble codes after the run to see if anything was logged in the computer?

You can check yourself too (if you know how to get into "dyno mode" you already know about this sequence):

- with car off, put key in ignition
- turn key to position 1
- press reset button 3 times very quickly

It will put you into a hidden service menu. I dont remember exactly where in the menu the trouble codes are, but I am pretty sure you can see them in there somewhere.

Yeah your tacho is going all the way past redline and back around to 0

I would hate to think what happens when the speedo does something like that.

Haha, just take whatever number you have, and add 300kmh to it.

Very strange. I've seen stalling occur after dynoing when the RPMs are at idle because of intake callibration issues, but never above 1,000 RPMs. Sounds like an ECU issue - specifically ESP turning on around 4K (as you mentioned). Can't think of it being anything else.

Did you try clearing the ECU?

If it does it on the dyno and not on the streets, it is definitely an ESP related issue.

If it was power related, you'd experience it on the street as well as on the dyno.

Thanks for the thoughts on the dyno problem

I appreciate everyones suggestions and comments:

(1) The car was successfully dynoed a number of times during the installation of the pulleys, etc and other cars have been dynoed to high horsepower levels so it can be done.

(2) The ECU was reprogramed by Powerchip who by the way also does great work. I need to check with them to see whether something might have slipped in. Maybe I should reload the original software, clear the ECU and then load the modified software... Vadim... what do you think?

(3) The ESP sounds like the culprit but going into dyno mode is supposed to disable it. Any thoughts on that on another way to make sure that it is disabled?

For all of you who are going to make these kinds of mods to your cars, it is frustrating to know that your car is making the power but not to be able to prove it on the dyno.. so it is in our interest to try and find out why this is happening

For what it is worth, I recently saw an 03 Cobra reflash the ECU with the "Predator" and the flash went bad. The only way we found out was on the dyno at 5,000 RPMs the A/F went from a nice 12.5 to 18+ (way before redline - yikes!). I would recommend the reflash - also, you might want to dyno a couple times with the stock flash so you can rule out it being something unrelated.

Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestion

Good advice. I will talk to Vadim about getting a reflash

that sounds like a bad tune and or a pegged MAF.
