Thinking about going to 3.27 differential gears.

......you guys are forgetting that the car needs to be driven daily. Even if your recommendations for the drag strip prove useful, you still need to drive the car on the street withou doing a burnout each time you come to a stop light or stop sign. I have first hand experience with an agressively geared MB and there are serious draw backs to agressive gearing on a 500HP car driven on the street. Infact what most tuners do is to gear the car in the opposite direction as HP increases. On a NA E55 or CLK 55, 3.27 diff will probably work just fine, but not in a supercharged one with 500HP.

thats not true 3.27 will help a tremendous amount if you get good wide rubber and LSD added to it. You cannot however do 3.27 and supercharger, you have to do one or the other. differentials are already called "poor mans supercharger" for a reason b/c they are almost like adding a supercharger so u can't do both. I just dont want to do supercharger or really anything else to the car other then high flow exhaust. 3.27 and free flowing exhaust are all i want on the car b/c i want it to be a daily driver.

Well 2.65 is way too long if you ask me... even with a 2.82 this car theoretically will still hit 196mph.
Also top speed (limited) still occurs in 4th gear ... but 3rd gear would be awesome with a 2.82....

............Actually there is a former forum member Sleestack a few years ago who had I belive a 3.27 gear ratio change done to his CLK430 by MKB. He then had a Kleemann s/c placed and had to go back to the stock ratio of 2.82. Again there are no big mysteries. If all one needed to do was place any kind of gear ration they wanted on their car and out run everyone else and yet be driveable on a daily basis, then the why stop at 3.27? Why not use 9.97 ratio and out run a cruise missile?

by definition the optimal gearing ratio for most cars should be one that allows the car to shift into 3rd just after 60 mph (typically 62-63). This allows the car to optimize its 0-60 times and also improve its 1/4 mile times substantially, most benzes shift into 3rd around 72-74mph, its a drastic difference. i'm not pushing 500+ torque to the wheels like the w211 guys so thats not of my concern. I just want 3.27 gears with the transmssion ECU upgrade. If i have no choice than to go to MKB and have them give me a custom 3.27gearset with 3.27 computer for $2000 then i guesss i have no choice but i think its much more worthwhile of a modification than a 3.07 which isn't that much of an increase. I'm currently talking to MKB to see what they can do for me, hopefully it works out. Thanks guys for the helpful info.

3.27 Diff gears
BTW . The housing is case Iron (magnet sticks to it) along with the Alum rear cover. The major weight comes from the Huge pinion gear and its large bearings. The N/A V-8 210 differential is nicely overbuilt. I'm going to keep the std gear ratio of 3.06 to 1 for now

................The standard ratio for the W210 E55 is 2.82 not 3.06.

Ted :
This one came out of a 03 CLK 5.5 AMG. . I looks excatly like the one in 06 Charger R/T with a 5.7 Hemi. I looked on the Quaife Site and they make a Torque Biasing Differential that fits it. and the w-210 mercedes . SOOOO I got one coming on the way. It took me about 3 hours to get it out of the car ( CLK 5.5) and it is stamped on the flange 3.06. Just another project. I will post the improvements When it is complete

I did some research and Mercedes Benz did make 3.27 limited slips from the factory on certain models and they sell for anywhere from 250-400 used. I know it would requires some labor but if you could transfer over the internals to the W210 diff that would be another alternative... whether it could handle the power is another question, just a thought.
