2004 E55 Navigation Upgrade

2004 E55 Navigation Upgrade
I'm looking into purchasing someone's 2004 E55. Do all 2004's have the command type of head unit if they have navigation or not?
The one I'm looking at has the command type of display, but when I hit the map button, it says nav not installed. There is also a disc slot at the top of the unit...
He said I could go to the dealer and have them just put in the disc, and I would then have navigation... is this true? Is the system easily upgraded from the dealer?

Look in the trunk and see if the drive unit is there. There should be a black box (about the size of a CD Changer) mounted in the trunk. If that is present, then you most likely just need a disk for the maps.
If that unit is not there, you would need to buy the drive unit, the antenna, splitter and Nav disc.

I looked in the trunk, no unit... I saw the sticker of the car, it didn't have the nav option.... I know the 2003 is a chore to upgrade to nav... just wondering if upgrading the 2004 is easier since it already has the head unit for it....

The 2004 E is very easy to install Nav in after purchase. It will take the dealer a few hours to install. DO NOT put a DVD in the dash slot, it won't come out (from experience). Good luck, and enjoy the car.

2003 E55 Techtite over Blue Leather.
It's just a matter of installing the DVD Rom drive, the Teled Aid antennae splitter, inserting a DVD rom disc and then re-configuring the fiber optic cables in the driver's side rear door sill compartment so that the newly-installed DVD drive is part of the fiber optic loop. It should literally tale an hour for some one who knows what theyre doing. Version coding with a star diagnostic computer is optional, not essential. Trust me, I did it all myself learning the hard way (by experimentation) and I even swapped out my 03' head unit for one of the Nav-enabled units!!
