Charcoal Filter Removed
I had a few minutes of free time, went to the car removed the torx screws from the front and back of the car opened the air box and pulled the charcoal filters out. Has anyone with the w212 E63 noticed a good HP gain? I see that the w211 e63's gained from 10-18 whp.

i noticed a huge difference, not necessarily in power, but in just smoothness. And that horrible downshift to 1st was gone! and revving up in neutral became much more responsive. I was amazed how much of a difference there was.
there's a thread on this, let me find it.

No problems with the vehicle.
Its a very simple mod.
Step 1. take the cover off where the Mercedes logo is, its fairly easy with a little bit of strength.
Step 2. remove all the torx screws, there are screws on the front, side and back of the air box.
Step 3. Pull the plastic up so you can see the orange air filter and lower the air filter into the box so you can easily get access to the charcoal filter. The charcoal filter is grey in color and all you have do is pull it from the front and it will come right out after a few thugs. Make sure your orange air filter is in place and close the housing tightly. Put all the screws back in and go for a spin.
Total time under hood - 5 - 10 minutes.

Mercedes or BMW do not have them in the European versions of the car. The charcoal filter is for emissions related issues not warranty related. Also if there is ever any kind of problem its so easy to just put the charcoal fitlers back that its a no brainer mod.
Do not install any K&N filters at the same time with the charcoal filter delete as previous members have had M.A.F warning light go off.

"anyone have any problems with their vehicle after doing this? "
after a couple of days ,no problems at all.. ..will second the"leave the k&n filter alone". wait for vadim to come up with something suitable and tested.

So if I remove the charcoal filter. And later plan to add some K&N filters in my car will the MAF go on? Or is only go on when I do everything at once?

No probs after 200 miles... I kicked my charcoals out of my M6 and never had a prob either... but if you do- just reinstall.

I have a carbon fiber air box with no charcoals and BMC filters for over 2 years and never had a CEL. Before that I removed the charcoals and was running BMC's in the stock air box and didn't have a problem either.

just FYI, my CEl was on for 2 weeks, hen it went away for a few days, then came back. Now it's on and off.
I ti'll it has to do with running lean or too much air and now that the filter isn't as free flowing, the CEL went away. but i'm sure when i clean it in a year or so, it'll probably throw the CEL again.

I removed the charcoals and replaced AF's with K&N at same time with both my '08 and now a 2010 with no CELs. You do feel a little more kick in the upper range as the car does not feel it's choking as it goes above 5K RPM.
