Panoramic sunroof owners please read

My E63 is about 8 months old and I have the panoramic sunroof. Lately, when I have been getting chassis flex (entering driveways with substantial steering angle, negotiating large speed bumps) I have heard a loud popping noise which seems to be coming from the moon roof, C pillar area. It is somewhat startling as sometimes it sounds as if the glass is about to break! I haven't taken it to the dealer yet, as I would have to drive around with a technician looking for driveways or speed bumps to demonstrate the issue. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem or heard of it? Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Im currently in month 4 of mine with no issues--- but I did have issues in year 3 with my W211 E55 and the Pano. The dealer replaced the rails under warranty but the job is exceptionally big to where a factory rep had to come out to ok the R/O.

I can just see the dealer trying to blame it on me lowering the car and adding aftermarket wheels, which would be hilarious since the issue happened a few times before those mods were installed. I once had a similar experience with BMW service when my E60 M5 clutch began slipping at about 22k miles and they tried to tell me it was because I had aftermarket springs on my car. After arguing with them back and forth for some time, I finally talked the Master Tech into driving my car home for the night (80 miles r/t) so he could see for himself. He obliged, and called me the next day in agreement. My clutch was replaced under warranty, but needless to say the process was a pain in the ***.

My dealer took care of me and I was fully dumped and modded but I can see your point. You just need a friendly S/A.

I have the same problem. But it happens so rarely (only under certain "flexing" situations) that it does not really bother me much. I would not want the dealer to take my roof apart. From my experience dealers may actually introduce more problems than they fix, especially for something like that.

I totally agree. It's my wife's car and she freaks out every time it happens. I re-assure her it's the pano all the time.

I had creaking noises on my 2005 E55 and they kept oiling it and it fixed it for a month then back to the same noises. This is part of why I did not get pano on my 2010 E63. I didnt want any noises. Although a white or silver car with pano looks stunning, but still.

I looked for a car w/o pano but unless I ordered it, I couldn't find one. I'd even prefer no sunroof. Sunroof delete should be an option, imho.

The pano will creak no matter what. Anybody that says theirs is quiet either is deaf, haven't had the car in the right situation where the pano creaks, or is just not admitting it. The flex is there, part of the creaking is just normal physics. They'll creak in other car brands, too.

Trust me, I drive the crap out of my cars and nothing yet--- or wait its because the radio is always on--- or wait, the roads in the OC are perfect

Its still too new but I had a pano a long time ago before most, if not all of you, had this feature (March 2004) and the car held up until about 2007 and then had super creaks (W211 E55). So as 220 said, the creak will occur sooner or later.

My X5M has a pano-roof and it doesn't creak. I had an X5 4.8 before that and it didn't either.

A colleague of mine's X5 creaks. But again, only in certain situations. He lives downtown in a loft and coming out of the basement garage hitting the exit speed bump at an angle makes it creak every time.

I went up to SF in a friend's Q7 and it doesn't creak but squeaks each time you hit the slightest bump (at any angle.) It's got 3 panels.

I think maybe it's just a combo of situation (speed/angle, etc..) and also age.

thats what they kept doing to my 2005 E55. oil and more oil. It fixed the issue for a month then back to same old noises.

Also, here is some more info I found out when I had my issue on my 2005.
1) There is a padding kit they can add that my service advisro told me about which should fix the creaking. I think it goes for $300 installed. Not sure if you can get it on the W212 but it should be no different I would think.
2) Temperature can make a difference as to when it creaks. For me, it was bad in winter when going from garage to outside. When i left the car outside all the time, it was not as likely to happen. Different temperature gradients can make a difference, at least this is what I found.

I love how MBZ service offers to sell you a padding kit to solve a problem that never should be there in the first place. That is basically acknowledging that a problem exists from the factory (which should be a recall) and not offering to warranty it. "We want to thank you for buying a $100k car from us, and we would also like to offer to take another $300 from you to fix your creaking sunroof." That little survey that comes after my service appointment would answered with a nice string of zeros.

haha yea well I was out of warranty on the 2005 E55 when they offered me this padding kit. Not sure if they would do it free on an under warranty car. In any case, there is a reason they are called the stealership.

by the way, if you ask your advisor and he does not know anything about it, I can call my advisor and ask him the details on it for you. Let me know if you need me to do that

I had the same issue on my car and would never get the pano again. The frame was replaced and it was quiet for six months then started to creak again. The noise gets worse over time BTW.

Wow, hopefully mine doesn't lose it's lack of creaking right now. If it does, the car is 100% going back at the end of the Lease.

I love the Pano look, but if this doesn't pan out, I'm just going the faux-poser Pano route, with vinyl on the roof.

Glad it's not an option on my C63
my wife's BMW wagon has Pano and I never heard it make any noise--I'll have to test it out!

2010 E63
Reviving an old thread...

I just picked up a 2010 E63 with ~33k miles. It has the pano roof, and pops loudly as well when the chassis is tweaked to certain angles.

Really bugs me, but sounds like there isn't much that can be done about it...
