W212 e63 DIED TODAY! Discovered major design flaw!

Don't know what happened. Went to lunch, then came back to my car 90 minutes later and it wouldn't start! Car was dead as a paper weight. i could see the lights for some reason were trying to be on. That little green head light was lit on my dash.

That's the oddest thing isn't it? Head lights usually turn off after 30 seconds. Even if you turned them on, if the car is off, it'll turn off after a 10 minutes. So i don't know why they would have been on. And more oddly i don't understand, why even if the lights were on, it would kill the battery in 90 minutes.

The worse thing about it, was parked head in and although I carried jumpers in the trunk, I couldn't get my car out of Park to move it so that I had access to the terminals!

I called MB service, spoke to 2 techs and read through the entire manual, NO WAY TO MANUALLY OVER RIDE OUT OF PARK!

Man, talk about dumb luck. I couldn't get my car out of park to push it back so I could jump it, even though I had jumpers!

Can you imagine towing it, now becomes a 2 step process. 1 you need to turn on the car to get it out of P, then you can tow it.

Anyway, don't know what happened. Then drove it 20 minutes stopped, turned off, then started again. Did it 2 more times in an hour. It was fine.

I don't know what happened. Was that a total fluke? Anyone else have anything similar.

FYI, if you car ever dies, don't even bother trying to manually take it out of P. Not sure if it's just our E63's that are like this, or all W212's.

Well my 2010 E63 died on me while WOT going @ 100mph. Suddenly, RPMs drop to zero, no power-steering or power breaks and the whole dashboard in red/yellow colors. Great feeling, ha?

Anyway towed the car to the dealer. They found a short in the ignition wiring.

At least you weren't going fast when that happened.

There should be a shift-release button/handle right next to (or behind) the brake pedal for these type of situations

I came out of my office one evening, to find my car wouldn't start. it was only 3 months old. I tried jumping it but engine wouldn't start. Battery and light worked fine but no ignition. Roadside came the next morning and replaced my battery. Everything went smooth after that.

Our cars use lots of juice. you can't use a civic to jump it with. :-) It needs to be an equally large battery / alternator.

Man... but that sucks your car died too in 3 months. Has it happened again? what caused it the first time?
