Edmunds Review Of The W212 E63

Not sure if this was posted before (I couldn't find it in the search headers), so here it is again, enjoy

Looks like the E63 launches very aggressively when going from a dead stop....the front-end looks like it is ready to come off

It's interesting to compare the W212 to Edmund's same testing earlier with the 2007 W211 E63 and the 2006 M5 (with SMG)

12.7 @ 114 mph W212
12.7 @ 113 mph W211 (2007)
12.8 @ 115.6 mph M5 SMG (2006)

60-0 @ 114 ft W212
60-0 @ 115 ft W211 (2007)
60-0 @ 112 ft M5 SMG (2006)

68.8 slalom W212
65 slalom W211 (2007)
69.20 slalom M5 SMG (2006)

.90g skidpad W212
.84g skidpad W211 (2007)
.84g skidpad M5 SMG (2006)

I'm curious as to what the new F10 M5 will be like…….

Honestly, the W212 looked amazing doing the slalom very sporty and very agile. I can't wait for the W212 twin turbo application as well

I'm very satisfied with the reviews I've seen of the new E63, on the motortrend's track performance between the CTS-V and the E63, the won by I think 2 tenths. Not bad for a car down nearly 40 horses While I haven't driven this car I really am impressed by AMG's effort to bring handling seriously to the performance category.

Having owned a W211 E55 with the pigmatic suspension and a crappy steering rack, Ill tell you that there is no comparo between the W212 and W211 in the handling/suspension department.

Its still a 4000+ lb car so its not a canyon carver but it holds its own quite well.

There's still pigmatic in the rear, though. Is it self-leveling? Does the 'rear only airmatic' actually smooth the ride noticeably like in the W212 E550 (and S Class w/o the ABC option), or if you had your choice would you prefer it gone all the way around like the C Class chassis?

I compared an E55 to a W211 63 and there's a noticeable difference there. The E55 is sloppy as hell. And a 030 optioned W211 is even tighter than the non-030 W211 E63.

Is there a suspension option on the W212? i.e., an 030 type sport valved airmatic in the rear?

Yes we still have the self leveling Pigmatic in the rear but the front steel springs and wider track definitely help. The steering rack is much faster at a 13.1 to 1 ratio.

My AMG experience has been with 4 cars, W211 with all airmatic, the CL65 with ABC, the W212 as described above and a W210 E55 with all springs. I would always forgo comfort for handling but thats just me. So an all spring car would be my choice versus an airmatic car.

The W212 E63 does indeed have an 030 like package but I have never driven it. From what Ive read about it (magazines), it is very very stiff and uncomfortable in the the Sport Plus/Double shock light on (stiff) mode but Ill bet I would actually like it .

I only drove a W211 E63 a few times and it was a non 030 car and to me, it compared suspensionwise to the E55 I had. The steering rack was faster though.

No doubt, I would much prefer coilovers on all four corners. The first mod I have made on any Porsche is to drop the OE coilovers and install Bilstein's.

Yeah, I used to always install PSS-9s and 10s, or KW V2s or V3s on my older P-cars (the 993 came with Monroes at SUV height just to keep the bumper height within USA DOT specs.) But I think the current suspensions with PASM are equally as good if not better than Bilstein or KW.

Yes indeed, PASM is a huge improvement!!!
