To LSD or not to LSD, that is the question.
I'm putting in an order for a 2012 E63 with the Performance Package and want to get some input on the value of having a Limited Slip Differential from owners that have them on their E63s. Is it worth an extra $2030? Does it generally improve acceleration?

It improves traction under certain circumstances. Of course better traction can improve acceleration. It's nice to have power shift over to the other wheel. For a street car, a LSD is not really necessary, imho. But if you do drive aggressively and plan to do some track time, it's a very good thing. Also if you ever drive in snow or bad weather conditions. I don't think the OEM version is a full locking mechanical LSD. And you can always get an aftermarket one (and some would argue a better one) installed later.

I'm in a very similar boat. MB separated the LSD from the P30 pkg. for 2012. Previously, it was part of the pkg, but then the pkg cost ~$2K more than it looks like it will be in 2012... When one gets in this "stratosphere" of expense with a car, it's kind of like-"Well, I've come this far, throw it on. What's the diff in 2k at this point?" I will say that I'm vastly more inclined to spend the $2K on this than about the same on carbon fiber trim pieces for the interior... Sheesh, that is silliness in my mind...

a car that gets very poor gas mileage.

What are your thoughts on an aftermarket LSD by Quaife?

If you wanna keep your warranty then go with the PP LSD package. If not, then go with Quiafe.
LSD will help put the power to the ground the most efficient way, next to tires.

2010 E63, steel grey, black interior, p2, amg wheels
I have a2010 E63 and want to retrofit an lsd. I've heard kleeman and renntech make them - and Quaife? Any advice as to which is best? Has anyone had this mod done? Still seems silly to me that LSD isn't standard on a car like this.

>500hp cars that does not come with LSD standard is ridiculous.
However, I am glad that MB separated the LSD from the PP.
Before, you had to spend nearly 9k just to get the LSD in the PP.
I'd rather MB just mark the price up another 2500 and not make it an option...

Quaife
I had a Quaife installed in my 07 a while back. Made a big difference. The car is much more balanced at WOT, and also comes off the line much better. I'm told it also helps in turns on a race course, have not personally validated that to date.
IMO the 12 up TT motors, especially P30 cars, should absolutely have LSD, whether OEM or aftermarket. Mercedes really should include it on the new cars.
The M156 engined cars also benefit, doing mine was worth every penny. Be sure you have a good shop to do the install properly, my Quaife was a very high quality product and has been completely trouble free.

I've got LSD on my 5.5 Wagon. It's a very good thing if you ever drive in a sporty fashion. You feel it working the first time you drive the car fast on a winding road. Essential in my book. Especially in low traction weather.

The whole argument about "you can get it afterwards" just means you should have got it in the first place....
It will improve your traction out of the whole and out of corners immensely.
Just get it and enjoy the fact you made the right decision.
If it was a no cost option, everyone would get it.

MB should make it a standard equipment for all AMG cars and just tack it onto the MSRP. IMO I don't think anyone in the market for an AMG would complaint about that. On the other hand, there is always the question of which one being better, the oem LSD or an aftermarket unit like the Quaife.

2007 SLK55 AMG 2013 E63 Wagon
I had a quaife installed on the SLK55 and love it and have optioned the LSD on the E63 wagon. I can't imagine not having a LSD on a AMG....should be standard IMO.

2 cents:
The 30% lockup on my CLS TT tuned, is worthless... it barely grabs.
The 60% lockup on my C63 BS is what we should have got.

I didnt want a LSD from mercedes but had to get it with the designo and pano on my E63. It's not bad but I'd feel a heck of a lot better with a Quaife or something else out back. Then again I'm already riding around on 20s so I guess it doesnt matter lol.
