What grade Mobil-1 should I use on '12 E63?
My typical routine is to take my cars to the dealer for the major service interval but change the oil myself every 5,000 miles between those major services. Additionally, I do the first change myself at 1,000 miles which will be in the next day or two. Any educated thoughts on what grade Mobil-1 to use? I live in San Diego so the car will never see anything below 35 degrees.

how imperative is the 1000 mile oil change, does everyone do it, or just wait till the recommended change the car tells you to do
and also , is there any DIY threads for doing an oil change on this car yet

No sure about the necessity of 1K mile oil change but it has been the practice as long as I remember. I believe the reason is to flush out the microscopic metal grindings during the process of breaking-in.
With the few E63 around--okay, maybe not in SoCal, I doubt there will be any thread on oil change specifically for this car. However, I think it's the same procedure on all MB cars with replaceable filter. I'll have to figure that out soon myself.
By the way, you will need to figure figure out a way to jack that car up and keep it up. Couple of weeks ago when I swapped out the winter tires from my winter workhorse Nissan, the car fell off the scissor jack (dumb $%# Nissan dealer damaged the jacking flange 10 years ago) as I was ramming the wheel with another wheel to loosen it and the car fell only a couple mm's onto a safety stand...whew! Anyway, always be safe and always have safety stands in place whenever you are underneath since they are cheap insurance. I have heard of many freak accident of people getting killed when the car fell off the jack or lift.
For the E63, I'm gonna get the stands and jack pad from this site:

The oil is always Mobil 1 0W-40 regardless of where you live. Yes, 0 viscosity seems overkill but it allows easier flow at start-up to protect your engine. I remember reading somewhere that 0W-40 uses shorter chain molecules to allow such low viscosity. Many people noticed less valve "pings" (whatever that means) during start-up with this oil.

Good advice on both the viscosity and the jack stands. I'll use both. Thanks.

The manual says MB Sheet 229.5 which allows for several manufacturers and viscosities. On my most recent AMG's: 2010 E63, 2012 E63, and 2012 CLS63 I use Mobil 1 5-40 which is an approved oil for our cars which carries the 229.5 denotation.

very interesting stuff about the stands, i dont know much about them but something i do want to get to do wheel swaps or whatever,
whats a good jack to get.
i want whatever i get to work well for my w126 also
cleaning my 3 piece amg oz wheels is alot easier to do with them off

Speak of the stands--I was thinking last night...How do you put the stand in the same slot you use to jack up the car? Unless you are using the emergency vehicle jack to jack up the car using the outside slot. I'm wondering if there is another central location to jack up the car so the entire front or back can be raised and the stands put underneath.
For other cars, I typically use the engine support cross membrane in the front or the differential in the back, but I'm not sure if it is safe to do so for the W212 chasis. Can anyone offer any info?

Thanks for the advice. Living in a warm weather town I would have preferred the 5-40 but couldn't get my hands on any. So I bought 0-40 and will change the oil this weekend.

Please let us know how it goes and all details surrounding it such as jacking up point, jacking stands used, filter, lug nuts, etc.
