Hi all,
Well I was sure that some has this problem as well but I can't find it, sorry if I didn't search properly and this tread exists.
Getting straight to it, my E63 had an A service and the oil drainage value fitted to the oil filter housing failed, basically this value stops the oil from draining below the level of the oil filter housing because it is mounted half way up the block. This also provides a degree of lubrication for the cam chain assembly and chain 2 x pre-tensioners during startup. See you National Geographic Mega Factory episode on the making of the SLS (blue pulleys from memory)
So now, after returning to my dealer complaining about a sort of kur-thunk on startup, was told oh we replaced the housing all is now good.
All is not good, every start produces a loud scrappy thunk as the pre-tensioners behave like baby rattles until oiled, sometimes the sound is more severe.
Other symptoms include excessive pinging from the bottom end under light load at 1200 - 1500 rpm, near a wall is sounds like unpoped corn.
About 1 litre oil every 300km.
Is there any Merc technical notes issued on this problem?
Thank in advance.
I have returned 3 times to this dealer to be told they cannot reproduce the sound and that the vechicle is up to spec.
On one of these occasions the voice was so severe I nearly had it towed.

MBWorld Fanatic!
Damn, that doesn't sound good. Sounds like there was no problem before the A service, is that right? What about trying another dealer?

No, no noise before the service, unfortunately this is the only dealer in the entire region, I will need to travel 2.5hours to reach another or put it on a truck....may have too - thanks

i had a bunch of issues and the mercedes techs on their site are pretty knowledgeable and are very good at pin pointing problems if you give them enough detail...
