My advice from buying 3 cars (2 AMGs) out of state, sight unseen, and being perfectly satisfied with the results:
I'm sure this isnt foolproof and others may have different experiences, but that's from my own personal experience. It's worked out well for me.
- Buy CPO which is only available from a franchised MB dealer
- Confirm service history and options (via VIN) with your local MB dealer
- Confirm VIN history via Carfax/Autocheck (I do both, but Autocheck is slightly better if you just want to do one)
- Use a company like Autochex to identify any cosmetic and obvious mechanical issues if the dealer doesnt have the quality of pics you need (ask them first). The dealer doesnt always let the inspector drive the car, but with CPO, you should be good mechanically

It shouldn't be a problem with out of state new cars. I think many people did it per postings before on this W212 forum. Just make sure you find out all the fee and tax and final figure before you do. Personally, I would love to just pick it up in person and drive it back. It's a lot of fun. I did it, not for cross country, but it's nearly from the northern end of the States to the southern end and back.
Yes, if you ever decide to go with used ones, go with CPO as mentioned earlier.

I believe in some states if you do this then you end up paying taxes within the selling state. For example I have heard if you buy a new car in California and do not live in California then you will have to pay taxes if the car is put into use on the California roads. Meaning if you buy it there and fly out there to just drive it to your home state that you end up getting hit by their taxes. No idea if that is true or not since simply heard it, not experienced it.

I bought a car in PA and they temp registered it so I could get it back to CA to register it and pay tax there.
FedEx has excellent enclosed trailer shipping service. Cost about 2K. They unload in order so cars dont move untill dropped to their owners.
Dont ship open trailer.

Kalifornia collecting tax just for driving on their roads?! It's no wonder--We all know what kind of condition that state is in at this time.
Wow, I didn't know FedEx has enclosed shipping service for car. That's good info.

Me either and if they are $2k across the country then that seems like a good price. I just paid I think $1200ish to have a car enclosed shipped from Maryland to Texas but do not recall what company it was.
