Recall F10 M5
Has anyone heard or know someone that has experienced a engine loss on the new M5 due to the oil pump failure recall?
My buddy just got his call yesterday they urged him to bring it in immediately!

Those motors are probably around $50-70 grand a piece. If I had thousands of $50-70 thousand dollar hand grenades running around I'd be urging em to get in for the fix before a couple more pop and cost me tons of money as well! lol

so early in the game--- wow. I did find a few on the ground that have the right oil pump- I wonder how they will fare? I really enjoyed the one I test drove too--- just a good driver.

I am also on the M5board and know of one engine that let go, during ED, and one other where the low oil pressure light came on but the engine hadn't seized. So, one totaled engine. How many specific known lost engines do you know of other than Barry's? I'd like to know myself.

Ouch. It is in Bimmer's advantage now to offer some prized incentives to get those owners to come in asap before another one of those $50-70K engines goes kaput.

M5 recall
Not in the least bit surprised, I don't trust BMW any more, especially after my 08 M3 sedan blew its engine at 26,000 miles, they shipped it back to Germany, turns out the 8th cylinder was defective from day 1. They put in a new engine, cost them 50k and shipped it back to the US. I will not buy another BMW.

I saw the news today about this recall. It sounds like they should send a flat-bed truck out to all M5 owners' houses and bring the M5's back. Otherwise, what would happen if the oil pumps stop working on the way to the service dept?

Let's be civil. Luckily for you guys, MB has NEVER had engine problems in the past.

In addition, there is the headbolts issue for the M156 engines. I'm sure all car manufacturers had recalls over engine problem. I just would like MB to issue a recall, put my car on a flatbed back to the service, give me a loaner car for the hopefully short duration, and fix the problem.

I owned an E46 M3 that had the dreaded main rod bearing issue. BMW did not handle that situation correctly; initially anyway. Ultimately they gave all owners extended warranties and all was good. As a brand new owner of a F10 M5, (luckily not included in the recall), I applaud BMW for the way they've handled this incident which btw involves an incorrectly manufactured oil pump supplied by an outside company. As soon as BMW indentified the cause of one M5 that ate its engine during ED, they have stopped production, ordered new oil pumps and have apparently committed to supply those new pumps to all of the current owners affected by this bad batch of oil pumps. Once those owners have been taken care of, production will resume.
Yes it's a PITA to those owners who now have to wait for new pumps to be installed or to take delivery only after their brand new car has the pump replaced. However the situation could have been much worse with multiple failures occurring. As I mentioned earlier there is still from the M5board and M5post only one known blown engine during ED and that owner is getting a brand new car. There is another report of a car being started up and then showing the low oil pressure warning light during ED. That car was flat bedded to a local BMW dealer in Germany. Further, there are reports that those individuals whose ED trips were cut short or ruined by this are to be compensated by BMW in full.
Is this an inconvenience? Damn right. Is it a full blown disaster that will have a lasting effect on the cachet of the car and/or effect resale? No where close at this time.

At the end of the day we all know BMW will handle the recall the best they can, and who cares if you have to drive a X5 loaner in the meantime, i mean really it isnt that big a of a deal. in addition my buddy dropped of his car on friday and is getting it back today! Oil pump changed good as new
I might even get an M5 that is new and on the recall list- they are willing to hold the car for me (no contract) and give me a loaner prior to the fixing of the car... Basically I get a 550i for nothing

Agree---- its a part- dismount and mount. Id rather have this issue than a spark plug issue with the M157 engine.

At the same time, the cause and effect is much more obvious this time with the M5 oil pump problem. With more silent problems like those now being battled in court on the M156 engine, I'm not sure if BMW will be any different than MB.
But overall, I do agree BMW is handling this issue quite well.
