It's basically like saran wrapping complex shaped parts, like a computer mouse with a pattern on it like carbon or a camo print. No way you could paint or vinyl wrap a part without kinks and other flaws. One of the factories I work with used to do a lot of this kind of transfer printing. The best one I saw was a kid's DVD player in a matte wood grain finish with an acorn remote. Looked like real wood!
From what I was told there are some kind of chemical in the process that they use that apparently is not so good for human touch so they stopped using it.
