Is an E63 right for me?,
So I am looking for some input from you all, I have been lurking for a while and I'm considering getting a 2010 E63, first some background long story!.
I live in MN, and have a 04 911 C2 summer car that I track 2-3 times a year, and an 01 Audi A6 4.2 winter car with 170k on it. Whilst I love driving my 911, the roads here are so bad you just get beat up using it as my DD in the summer with all the potholes and expansion joints. The car whilst 8 yrs old comes alive on the track, I'm no professional, just and intermediate driver, but I love driving it on the track although only 2-3 times a year. My wife also doesn't drive it as it's a manual, and after a few stalls she was put off. The Audi is also a great winter car, but it is getting old and needs some work if I keep it much longer.
So what I am looking for is a 'do it all' sports car, DD, winter driver, the lot. I want something that I can drive daily in the summer in Auto, that doesn't shake me to pieces, will carry my 2 kids to sports events, and my wife will be happy to drive it. I then want to drop some winter tires on it and drive it in winter (I no longer want to mess around with 2 cars, and want the space for more motorcycles...another story), BUT and here is the question about the E63, I also still want to take it to a track a few times a year and have some fun.
I always felt that Mercedes were fast in a straight line but not in corners, but it seems the W212 has addressed that, I know it could be argued that a V10 M5 is a better track car but I don't think I could live with the jerky SMG day to day, or the reliability fears, and the S6 is a great winter car, but just to plain to look at and dull to drive.
Anyone infrequently track an E63, and DD it summer and winter, am I nuts thinking this car would fit the bill?

Having driven the e63 for a long period before purchasing the ml63, I can only strongly recommend you the e63!
IMO it's the perfect car if you are looking for a thrilling car to drive and something that can still be very comfy /that you can drive everyday![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
All the technology and choices you have: m & s mode between the suspension and the engine makes it almost perfect !! IMO amg really have built an incredible machine! It can be used both by a gm and a track guy depending on the set up

2017 AMG GTS
it will address all the needs you want except for the winter! you will obviously notice a difference from that car on the track vs the 911. IMO if you want a great all in one car id go for a panamera gts or turbo!

I have the 2012 and dd it, but also go to the track occasionally. Winters will be tough I think... If you have the cash, get the new AWD version if you're not opposed to AWD, but if you think you can handle the red version in the winter, go for it! The car is surprisingly taught and handles nicely, but there is no getting rid of the weight.

Get a set of good winter tires, take it easy on the gas and winter will be fine with RWD as well if the snow is not terribly frequent.
E63 is a great all around car. not as light as a 911 but holds its own well.

Same comments as posted above regarding getting a good set of winter tires and you should be fine. Of course, it will be even better if you go for the AWD version. With the road condition there, it sound like you will need to go for 18" rims.

I'm comming off a C63 and waiting to order a E63 4matic. the main reason I let go of the C was the poor winter capabilities. I ended up buying my Saab 93 at the end of lease because it was XWD and could get me to work in a snow storm. I guess it all depends on how bad winter is in your region. RWD 500 + HP cars are not really made to drive in harsh winter conditions, even with all the electronics helping. If you decide to go for the RWD E63, get a set of studded winter tires.

I drive my 2010 E63 year round. With Winter tires, the car is fine. Only trouble comes in deep, unplowed snow and ice-Torque becomes a liability as it would with any RWD, just magnified with the E63.

Thanks for all the reply’s, unfortunately a newer AWD is out of my budget, where I live our roads are pretty much plowed within 12 hrs of the snow falling. I am pretty confident with a good set of snows it will be fine.
I guess I was more concerned whether that car was comfortable day to day and yet can be ‘fun’ on track (as if a 500hp RWD car wouldn’t be).
I put the Audi away (I have a car lift for storage) on Friday and drove the 911 all weekend, again love the sound and power, but god do I feel every ripple in the road, and a ‘repaired’ ripple here can be a 2 inch wide x 3 inch deep rut!!

well if you want a car to go over those you need an suv ![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
63 will definitely be smoother over bumps than 911, but no S class. then again S class is not a car you take to the track.
if traction becomes too much of an issue, a bag or two of sand in the trunk is cheaper than AWD E63

I was considering e63, until I saw the new CLA 45 AMG, then I realized its the perfect daily driver, especially with 34mpg out of an AMG. My other car is ML63 so I realized two cars with 6.3L is just silly. 12 mpg is really getting old, and CLA45 is 4wd, with DCT and 4 seats. Even has launch control. MB official 0-60 numbers are 4.5 (and those are usually conservative). For $55k with options and weighing in at 3400 lbs... It's hard to beat that package
