What is this 'P' on the multi-display?

I just noticed this P on the display from 0 - 20mph. I can't seem to find any reference to it in the manual, is it something to do with Parktronic? or the Parking sensors or something??

It's "Active Parking Assist." Page 212 of the manual.

The car is assessing suitability of spaces.

it doesnt? I thought it was with the Advanced drivers package... I've read the manual linked in another thread and they describe the steps...

Thanks guys. I didn't think this car had any of those fancy-schmancy parking systems as I didn't opt for the "Drivers Assistance Package". I guess i should read my manual a bit more

geez i need to read the manual, I thought this meant you can put the car in PARK when this P is lit. Obviously not the case if it stays on till 20 MPH

I had the same question! I don't think it has to do with parktronic because those light up when they are functional.

Btw I love the hold feature for stop lights so your foot doesn't get tired holding the brake.

Geez guys read the manual! Mine parks itself quite well. Nice bonus that the new E63 will also park perpendicular to the street, not just parallel. Used that feature just yesterday in a tight spot.

When the P comes on, it's merely searching. If it finds a spot on the right, a little right arrow comes on near the P. Then you need to put it in Reverse, at which point it asks if you want it to auto-park itself. If you want a spot on the left, you have to turn your left blinker on, or it won't give you a left arrow. And follow the prompts because it often tells you to switch between Reverse and Drive.

On my S you don't need to do the blinker. Just find a spot pull close to it, drive slowly from start of spot to end and you should see an arrow pointing to the right next to the P. Once you have completely passed the spot (it measures to make sure it will fit) if the P is filled blue (may need the arrow too) you should come to a complete stop, put it in reverse (keep foot on brake) and it should ask if you want it to park itself or if you checked surroundings and you just click OK and it will either guide you or do it urself depending on option.

If you want to park on the right, you CANNOT use your right blinker. If you want to park on the left, you MUST use the left blinker.

Really? Thanks man I didn't know that. I will try it on my S. Not too many 1 ways in LA except downtown so I never have to park on left. So I'm guessing in UK or RHD countries it's opposite?

Here's Mercedes' official take on the feature:

And here's a lovely young lady performing a demo with a CLS

And I just could not resist posting this video of BMW dealer demo'ing their version of park assist.

That's pretty nice. Wouldn't cause a problem with traffic ***at all***

Two minutes and fifteen seconds to parallel park a small car in a massive space.

2012 cars don't have this feature. 2014 cars can operate the steering (see the follow-me adaptive CC)... I wouldnt be surprised if the E-class can park itself.

pre 2014 cars could detect a parking spot and guide you to park but in 2014 they can park themselves.

Why do you keep saying this? It's simply not true. My 2014 E63 parks itself quite well.

Can't find it anywhere in the '12 manual. Probably a 2014+ thing.

*EDIT* Found it under PARKTRONIC. Huh... I'll try and turn it on. I parallel park every damn day :-/

My 2011 E550 can park itself, what are you folks arguing about?
2011 can park and 2014 cannot?
