2014 Mercedes E63 AMG S vs Tesla S P85+ which one to buy?
I have driven both cars and cannot decide which one to buy. Anyone else driven both of these and like to share their feedback? My priorities are performance, handling and safety. The Mercedes seems to be the best at all three but the technology and unique seamless acceleration of the Tesla is hard to ignore. Price is about the same after government credits on the Tesla. Obviously on going fuel costs will be significantly lower with the Tesla.

I'd personally go with the AMG, tesla kind of in a way limits where you can go, i.e. roadtrips things like that. I like the tesla, however love my E63, interior on the AMG is very very nice, where the tesla felt kind of cheap to me in a way, although i love the design and everything inside, with the big screen! at the end of the day, the e63 is a complete monster and although im sure the tesla is pretty fast, i dont think it is in the same ballpark as the AWD s model.

Before 100, after 100, no contest and no sound... I would have to have sound to match my driving.
The car looks good and TQ curve from the start of acceleration is impressive though. The same dialogue is going on over at the M5 boards. Id have a tough time getting the car as a daily main driver. It would be a good 3rd or 4th car for me.

I haven't driven the Tesla but have sat in it at the "showroom" at the local mall. It is nice, and has some great attributes, but I would go with the E63 S. Unless of course you are one of those people that like to brag about how green you are....

Tesla S is very fast in the more likely daily driver scenario of 45-65 mph. It does this in 1.7 seconds compared to the new Corvette Z51 at 1.8 seconds. I cannot find the Mercedes equivalent but assume it is about the same.

It was a surreal moment for me watching Tesla accelerating - and no sound

Ive had the opportunity to run a few from digs in my M6 and my R8--- the R8 crushed it and the M6 pulled as well. I did one rolling run on a mexican toll road to about 160 and his headlights were like two little light pens falling down a deep well.... bye bye

Canuck, you didn't answer the ultimate question: How will you be using this new car?? Long road trips?? Local only?? To and from office or work??
I see you have a Jeep too, so AWD is obviously an important issue!!

Plan to use the car mainly short trips but a few long ones. As are far as snow the Mercedes is pretty low to the ground despite the awd while the Tesla has almost perfect weight distribution and adjustable height.

1. Its highly unlikely that an E63 will be a total loss after minor accident.
2. An E63 wont spontaneously combust after striking a small object at highway speeds.
3. You wont need a fire extinguisher in the cabin of an E63 for daily commute.
4. If your E63 ever did any of the things mentioned above, at least Mercedes would recall the car and fix the problem before that issue results in the first fatality.
5. Just saying...

Test drove one yesterday. Gotta say i was surprised at how much i liked it. Much more powerful then id expected it to be, and the in car technology is amazing, far beyond mercedes. Though the interior was not as refined feeling as mercedes, not as plush and comfortable. Once they add adaptive cruise control, lane tracking, and seat massage/cooling features it would be easily on par with mercs.
As for range, the sales woman showed us all the current and upcoming super charger locations crisscrossing the country. According to her by 2015 the charging stations will be in enough places that you can do coast to coast without having to worry about running out of juice. Toss in that my office has a number of stations to charge EVs, I could easily just charge it there and not at home (for free!).
IMO once they improve the interior comfort a bit more id easily be swayed towards Tesla instead
