Better resale value?

Like I've mentioned already, I'm leaning toward ordering an E63-S in a few months and have looked at other makes as well. In the running is the new Audi RS7. I was NEVER an Audi fan(hated them) but I gotta admit that their recent cars are really nice. I especially like the A7/S7/RS7 body style. Its the most unique looking of the Audis. So, my question(s) is this:Which car do you suspect will hold their value better? They are both relatively rare, expensive and luxurious rockets. I know that in general, AMG's lose value pretty quickly and RS do better.

A little back ground. I am not a baller. I cannot afford multiple high end cars at once. This is a gift to myself for working hard. I normally buy my cars based on looks, performance, rarity, and bang for buck. THIS time, I'm looking at LUXURY, rarity, performance, and bang for buck. But resale will also play a role. For example, If I buy an E63 AMG-S for $100K today, what does recent history dictate it will be worth in 3yrs? $75K? $65K? (assuming low mileage and mint condition)(I do about 5-7K miles/yr) I know the RS7 will be rarer, and does cost a little more, but if the last RS models are any indication, then the RS7 will retain a lot of its value. I know they are cars and cars do not make great investments, but like I said, I'm not a baller. I'd like to hold on to most of my money if I decide to upgrade or sell down the line.

I know its a loaded question, especially about predicting the future value, but you guys would know better then I do since most have had multiple AMG's.

I like both cars. A lot. I especially like the RS7's looks and rear hatch. I love the AMG's power output and interior more. They are both AWD, and both are very fast. The RS7 will be more rare, but the AMG is more proven. Man, this sucks! LOL! At the end of the day, I will be happy with either one. What a problem to have.lol

BTW, I will not consider leasing.

I'm coming out of an Audi. Crushing depreciation. Owned it. Liked it, save for dead steering and understeer. Audi Financial has no clue how to finance these things. I paid cash for car I just sold, and depreciation, tires, and extended warranty alone were 1900/month. Leases are 50% higher than BMW or MB. Idiotic. Either way, buy or lease, AoA screws you. Bentley used them, switched and promptly leased 3000 V8 Bentleys for less than they wanted for RS7 or S8. I've driven both, too many dealer friends that want my $. S8 nicer car, can get 3 people in back seat. RS7 only 4 place.
Truly, I'm tired of screwing with cars like these out of warranty. AMG, S/RS and M all get hammered. MB and BMW intelligent enough to support resale. Audi isn't. Look at Manheim thread I just posted auction sales on E63's. Off lease residuals on E63 are set at 58-60%. Optimistic.
Reconsider leasing. Coming from someone who used to own leasing company and deduct both ends, and someone who's paid cash. Invest the principal and let finance division eat the ugliness. My family's life has changed greatly, and I'm even more into using other peoples money.
1.5-2% paper on $80k note is a few hundred less than 4.4% lease paper on $45k part of car used. Once out of warranty, greeting a $2.5k service bill is common.
We haven't had Benz in ages. Tons of BMW's, M3's, M5, Z8, M Roadster. Last M5 I had was E39. New M5 ain't no E39. Ain't no E90 M3 either.
Drive S8, shop deals, and I'm leasing E63 as deals are great, I can walk if I'm unhappy, and 4wd cured the drift car crap.
Good luck.

I guess I don't understand the premise here:

Why be concerned with projected resale value, yet not be willing to consider leasing?

If your horizon is 3 years, then leasing is always going to be your best best. Unless the MF is considerably above traditional financing APR.

I used 3 yrs as an example for max initial depreciation. Sort of paralleling the logic of a standard 3 yr lease depreciation. Nothing more. I usually keep cars for 5yrs.

DO NOT keep these cars out of warranty. I've tried. Just build a big bonfire of $100's and roast marshmellows. It'll be more fun.
Audi I just sold was 8.5 yrs in family, whopping 45k miles. Lived in shop over little crap. Came out to load car for family road trip, 600mi quicky. Suspension fault. Was fine, back from shop a couple weeks. Waiting for parts a hobby? You'll love it.
My Ferraris never such pains in the azz as complex German sedans.

That sucks to hear. I'm not used to having my cars go to the dealership for warranty work. I would absolutely hate it if I did.

It wasn't bad early on, but 3-5yrs out, stuff fails. Stupid stuff, expensive. I don't want to drive a POS Q5 or A6. If I did I'd buy one.
Wife drives 2011 M3 like yours, has seen dealer x 3, total. 28k miles. She runs it very hard, DCT, nothing has been an issue. It, my E39 M5, and our E36 M3's were awesomely carefree.
The rest of the BMW's, Jags, MB's from years ago all had stuff that became annoying as hell. Our Range Rovers x3 and a Lexus 430 were all quite low maintenance too.

I was the original owner of an RS 6 that was recently replaced by my E63S (a TT RS got the boot too) and I can echo what others say, Audis depreciate like a rock (even a realtively rare C5 RS 6 with maybe only 1200 examples stateside) and I would not (again) own an Audi RS * out of warranty. I think Audi RS * cars are engineered too close to the limit and therefore can be a maintenance nightmare long term. I also think Audi RS engines are sublime, but invariably saddle to a mediocre platform. For reference, I did hold a #1 spot to replace my aging RS 6 with an RS 7, mostly just because no other car met my criteria; the day the E63S specs were announced, I bailed on my RS 7 allocation and jumped on the E63S list and I have never looked back.

If the ownership horizon possibly might extend beyond the factory warranty, then purchasing an ELW within the initial 30 days of ownership is a no-brainer for a car like this. Or any high-end, gadget-laden auto.

Loved the E39 M5 and E36 M3 when we had them in the family. The golden age of BMW M cars.

Did you by chance ever own a 360? I've got one in mind for my first ferrari. I think it would be a fun sunday driver in contrast to the E63. It looks like they are done depreciating and there are lots of them out there.

Resale?

Before I leased my E63 I had been watching used values and they drop like rocks. There would be no way I would own one outright or finance one. Let the bank take the hit. It is a business vehicle so it softens the blow.

The Audi's are sure pretty, but no one I know that has had them has not had trouble.

How many 25 year old Audi's do you see running around. In Southern California, where you should see some, I see NONE. They are all throw aways.

Guys, leasing doesn't protect you from vehicle depreciation. The lessor isn't stupid, they factor in the expected depreciation when determining the lease rate. The worse the initial depreciation, the higher the lease rate - you're paying for it regardless of whether you lease or finance.
