smart key problem

Just picked up a new '14 this past weekend but am now having a problem with the smart key.

If I lock/leave the car for some period of time (~1 hr), I am not able to unlock the door by touching the handle when I return ... cannot open the trunk either. It does unlock if i hit the unlock button on the smart key ... same with the trunk.

But, if I just exit the car, lock it, and immediately try to unlock via the door handle it works fine. Just seems like after some period of time ... it just stops responding to the door handle.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

You may be walking up and pulling the door handle too fast. Happens to me once in awhile.

On my 07 R with keyless go the system (according to the manual) will deactivate itself from being able to be unlocked by the touch of a door handle after a few days (I think 3?). Weird that yours is having the issue after only an hour. I'd look into Patric's solution.

Thanks for the thoughts on it ... I am usually in a hurry to get back in it! But, when it happened to me last night, I even tried taking the key out of my pocket and putting it closer to the door handle ... wondering if maybe it just didn't 'see' it in my pocket ... but still didn't work.

Funny thing is that it worked fine this morning after having been locked overnight in the garage. I am wondering if it is somehow effected/caused by heat since it has only happened when parked outside.

Happens with both keys too.

I did read some posts on the E class forum that taking the battery out and putting it back in seems to have fixed some similar issues ... guess I will give that a shot.

Just hate to take it in already but I guess I may have to.

One other thing to consider is electro-magnetic interference. I have problems with my key if I have it near my phone. However, based upon what you've noted above, this doesn't seem to be your issue.

You do have to avoid gripping the outside of the handle while you open it. I've done this a couple of times in my C63 and it thinks you're still locking the door.

I wonder if your second battery is bad or going bad
