R2s, kind of aggressive, however I thought I'd give them a try. We cannot run studs in WI.

Not sure where you're at but here one can never have too much winter tire..I wish I didn't put new Pirelli Scorpions on last winter as I'd put a set of Hakkas on..

we get plenty of snow, but my main concern is my 1/4 mile uphill driveway with a sharp turn and drop off

Plenty of great replies already, but my favorite is the one I usually say to friends when they ask. All-season = NO season.

Plenty of objective tests out there showing snows work better in cold and snow/ice and summers work better in dry/warm set compared to all-seasons in either condition and isn't being safe when you really need it, for you and your family most important? I know it is for me and if I spend ~$100k on a very high performance sedan, I should have the tires to help it perform at its best regardless of conditions.

Jim, nice car got the same polar w/ night package

Also prepping myself for winter and already decided on tires - P's Sottos, but started doing research on the rims.

How are the OZs in terms of quality as I want to get a black rim too and any other brands you can recommend. At ~$250 its tought to beat the OZs, but wondering what kind of durability these rims have and the paint quality...

I had cast OZs as my winter wheels on a 2006 Infiniti M 45 sport for three years. They held up fantastically well in NYC potholes

They are nice wheels, great finish, I wanted something that looked kinda stock. Tire rack does not have them on their website in black because they had only two set. reorders will be Feb.

Nice thing about black is when they start to look a little ratty it's easy to spiff them up with a coat of flat black or plasti-dip

I was going to do the P's also, however my Nokian experience has been really great over the years. They also have a more all season version. There was some talk about performance and speed rating on this forum but who cars in winter. If I want to go that fast ,Its on a track were it belongs.

Coming out of my Porsche Panamera 4S, I used the staggered OEM Pirelli Sotto-zero the last three winters. Even last winter which was brutal, I used my Panamera a handful of times in the snow & the traction with Sotto-zeros was with my comparable to my former pick-up truck. Additionally, as stated above, the drop off handling was nearly imperceptible. I plan on going the same route with my new E 63 S.

I really don't like TR when it comes to stuff like that. The guy/gal on the other end of the phone knows nothing about your car, the conditions under which you drive and probably hasn't even used the tires he/she's selling.

I'm sure you'll be fine with what you got, but check with the experts ( lol ) here first.

So ironic because the Tire Rack person on the phone suggested the staggered Pirellis for me under the reasoning that a squared setup would not be great with all of the car's power and torque in the dry.

My 2 cent... Blizzack are the best tires for winter. The narrower the better for winter.
Should run the same size all around. It's winter & who will go over 130 mph in the winter?
All crazy speed should be left for summer tires and in the summer.
Years of trial & error....
If you have the money do 2 sets of tires summer & winter.
You will not want 1/2 fast on your super performance vehicle.
All season are great on standard vehicles E320..... Not AMG.

after talking to some online dealers - most recommend that savini as good option for non-forged quality rims.

this is the one I would go with since its closes to the 10spoke AMG

Anyone had experience with them?

I had just had the A/S Continental ExtremeContact DWS XL installed and the car now handles a corner like, if not worse, than my wife's old volvo ... pretty much a nightmare.

Thankfully, they have a 60 day satisfaction guarantee of some sort on them so I am going to send them back to tire rack as soon as I can get them back off the car.

I guess I will just do a dedicated winter tire, probably the Sottozeros, when it gets closer to winter.

So, if your thinking about getting the Contis ... don't bother.

Although the DWS is rated as having the best snow traction of just about any performance all season tire, the tire is notorious for a soft sidewall. A soft sidewall won't work well in a car as heavy as the E63. That's why I never considered using it in my current vehicle which weighs as much as the E63 (2012 BMWS 550xi). I got the staggered Pirelli Sottozeros for my incoming E63 S. If I were going all seasons there's no question I would've gotten the Michelin pilot sport AS3s again (which is what I have on my current car). Those are fantastic tires in all conditions and temperatures but snow.

The Pirelli Sottos are an ideal tires for this area. Mine will be going back on in a couple weeks, and will stay on well into early Spring. Last year, the wear was excellent as was the traction in all conditions (for a non-summer tire).

You'll start noticing the stock summer tires getting squared off over night with this rush of colder weather we're having right now.
