You have 30 days to buy the warranty or MB tacks on a surcharge... think its like an extra 15%. The best deal I found for 6/75 was 5K and that was through a different dealer. I'm also a USAA member and there plan was around 2K, so I asked my friend if he has ever had issues with them (a MB shop foreman) and he told me no.

I'm buying one because I know if (or when) these cars break it will be expensive. I bought my warranty from jjj benz (a member) here and got a good price. I know there are others as well that can hook you up.

I went with the longest and most comprehensive Mercedes warranty I could get (7 year/125k miles), but when I did it a couple years ago, they were $3300 if you went through Erin at Santa Rosa (my dealer matched her price).

I understand there may have been a (massive) price correction. I'm not sure I would have purchased it for double the price. $3300 in AAPL would probably eventually pay for whatever happens to the car as well as any $6500 warranty.

Last year the MB warranty prices went up (seems almost double) and they changed the maintenance plans as well. They no longer offer the 5 year pre-paid (4 is the longest) and it looks like the cost for the 4 year is about the same as the 5 year used to be. This plan was a loss leader for sure so it was bound to go up in price.

That being said, I'd still buy one... just talk with Erin or someone else and see if your dealer will match or just go with them.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of September 2014, MB scaled back the max miles on its ELW from 125k (and 7 years) to 100k and 7 years AND doubled the price.

I did a national search of many dealers for the best price for the 7 year/100k miles ELW on my 2015 E63 S. Best price was $6400. I took it. One major repair could exceed this figure. Moreover, unlike for my 2014 991 TTS, GEICO will NOT cover the 2015 E63 under its mechanical breakdown insurance citing too high a prior loss experience with the car.

Yes I think ELW is a smart buy even at its elevated current prices

my oil leak suggests you don't want to own one without a warranty. imagine the labor cost of disassembly on a 4Matic to get to certain parts...

There is a new forum section that is strictly about extended warranties and people give contact information of dealers that are giving discounts across the country. You can contact any of them and get a quote. I'm looking for a warranty currently and have a few that have given me quotes. They are still rather expensive for AMG owners but I got a much better price than my local dealer. The price I received from the forum MB contacts was $1800 less for the 7/75 and $1500 less than 7/100 year warranty I received from my local dealer; so I would highly recommend the forum below.
