Purchase considerations: 2010 E63 (or 2012 CLS550)...
Hello all...
First off, I hope this is the right forum (W212)...
Any significant issues to consider or watch out for when purchasing a 2010 E63? I've read about the head bolt issues, but that seems really to be the only major worry for the M156 Engine?
I'm considering either a 2010 E63 or 2012 CLS550. Although the 4.7L TT comes close in performance, it's doesn't quite match the 6.3L AMG. AND the 2010 E63 is a little cheaper to purchase (of course tough to find one under CPO). I've done quite a bit of research throughout MBWorld, and it sounds like the 4.7L TT engine is much more reliable than the 6.3L AMG (better mpg too). BUT, can't beat the AMG and that exhaust note.
I appreciate ANY feedback, comments, advice from current W212 owners. Just want to go into any purchase aware of "expected" potential issues. I'm new to MB and the forum... ...I've found BMW and Maserati forums very useful, and I'm sure I'll have the same experience here...
Thanks much!

Not a current owner but hope to be one day. The other issue is with the lifters and cam wear on the M156. It can also be very expensive. Both lifters and head bolts can be replaced but the trouble is knowing whether there is already wear. 550 biturbo with a tune is probably faster than a stock NA 63 but amg is the whole package.

Thanks tw2... confirms what I've read. Do you know if there are any DIY threads for replacing head bolts or cam/lifters? Not afraid to do it myself. I'm pretty handy mechanically, I've done alot of work on my 4.4L BMW engine. Saved $4K cleaning out exhaust ports and replacing the secondary air pump system, but there was always someone who posted a DIY guide with pictures.
I've read somewhere to be careful with low mileage cars (e.g., less than 8K a year or so). That kinda jives with my experience as well. Seems if a car is going to have major issues, it usually shows up by 60K miles.
If I end up going the E63 route, I'm thinking an '10 with 60-75K miles. I'll save $3K-$4K over an '12 CLS550, but that doesn't make sense if I just end up with $4K in repairs the first year or two.
Thoughts?
Cheers and thanks again!

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
To me it would be a no brainer, I'd go with the 2012 cls 550 and do a tune and mufflers if I wanted performance and sound. I would not want to screw around with a expensive engine that had known defects that MB would not warrantee. 2012 is 2 years newer too. The TT motor in the Cls is a lot more fuel efficient and like you said originally more reliable, just do other mods to your liking to make the car what you want it to be.

Yes there is a write up in the C63 forum i believe. I would also be happy tackling it myself but you will want a copy of WIS too. I don't know how i would decide between an E550 and E63, good luck! As far as i am aware there are no new 550's in my country which makes it easy for me. There are lots of 550 vs 63 comparison threads. The handling braking transmission etc are not through same.
