Dash cams, or nah?

So, I've been pondering these 1080p dash cams that take sd cards:
Amazon.com : TaoTronics Car Dashboard Camera HD 1080P Wide Angle with G-Sensor WDR Night Mode 2.7" Screen : Electronics Amazon.com : TaoTronics Car Dashboard Camera HD 1080P Wide Angle with G-Sensor WDR Night Mode 2.7" Screen : Electronics

you know, cuz insurance scams, crappy scrap metal haulers that are all over the LA freeways (just saw a friggin microwave fall off of a crap Taco truck this afternoon).

Does anybody run one of these? Is the precautionary measure worth the possibility of increased break-ins?

I've heard good stuff about the G1W-C it has a capacitor instead of batteries (which usually fail first) thinking of getting one myself...

Black Box G1W-C Capacitor Model Dashboard Dash Cam - Heat Resistant - Full HD 1080P H.264 2.7" LCD Car DVR Camera Video Recorder - WDR 140° Wide Angle 4x Zoom with Motion Detection Night Vision G-Sensor - NT96650 + AR0330

I think they're a great idea... so much going on!

Yes to a dash cam. Go for even higher resolution. I installed one of the following in every car I own. The reason I did so was a friend of mine was sued for several hundred thousand dollars after his son bumped a car in front at a stop light. Literally a scratch on the bumper from the license plate bolt but the lawsuit alleges all sorts of terrible injuries two years after the incident. Lawyers are now arguing it out. I used mine to show that an alleged one-way street was not actually marked as a one-way street. I also recorded a very cool flash flood in the Arizona desert and a couple of traffic accidents (not me!).

PAPAGO GS520-US GoSafe 520 Super HD 2304x1296 Dash Cam

Con: I had to use silicon seal on the camera suction cup on two of my cars; the windshields had the "pebbled" surface where the camera mounts in front of the rear view mirror. Not difficult, just unexpected.

The best solution is a camera that's recording all motion, even when you're away from the car.

A few different ways to get this. The simplest is a battery cutoff protection circuit.

But yes get something now!!

no MBs at the moment :(
Are you guys ever concerned about the camera being used as evidence against you? I'm sure you all drive exactly the speed limit at all times, but hypothetically should something happen, couldn't your own video be subpoenaed?

Excellent question. Don't connect any gps antennas, or get a model that doesn't have gps. You can figure out where you were based on street signs, you don't need to know how fast you were going (it can only harm you).

And if you get into a wreck, don't admit you have a camera just yet. If someone points out your camera, warn them the camera messes up a lot, and you'll have to check if it even recorded the incident.

Go do research and get a camera NOW!!

I doubt it'll help with break ins, but like the idea for accidents and road rage.

Found this that I think would be a better choice:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-ADR810-Collision-Detection-EasyCapture/dp/B00WFNS4EE

Good luck.

fascinating. I just bought a couple of these:
Amazon.com : Black Box G1W-CB "Black Bezel" Capacitor Model Dashboard Dash Cam - Heat Resistant - Full HD 1080P H.264 2.7" LCD Car DVR Camera Video Recorder - WDR 140° Wide Angle 4x Zoom with Motion Detection Night Vision G-Sensor - NT96650 + AR0330 : Car Electronics Amazon.com : Black Box G1W-CB "Black Bezel" Capacitor Model Dashboard Dash Cam - Heat Resistant - Full HD 1080P H.264 2.7" LCD Car DVR Camera Video Recorder - WDR 140° Wide Angle 4x Zoom with Motion Detection Night Vision G-Sensor - NT96650 + AR0330 : Car Electronics

with the black bezel, and no GPS. cheap enough to have it stolen and not care. looks like 32gb cards are necessary for about 5 hours.

also, would love to see some pics of how all the cars look with the dash cams mounted. i think stealth is really of the essence? more so than radar jammers, etc.

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
One of the major difficulties is where to tap for power. It's too bad they got rid of the power socket in the glovebox.

Would anyone be able to put up a brief picture tutorial on how to tap for power? I'm not too "electronically-inclined" thus I hate to have the car go up in flame as a result of not knowing what I'm doing.

I have been always on the verge of getting a dash cam or not.

Especially so much snow here these days- all the winter came in few weeks.

This thread pushed me to get one.

I ordered 118-C for my car. Installation seems easy for now. I have gps and everything else already in my car so got the basic model.

Got this one

Spy Tec A118-C Capacitor Edition Full 1080P HD Video Car Dashboard Camera - No Internal Battery | Novatek NT96650 Chipset + Aptina AR0330 Lens | Stealth Dashboard Covert Mini Cam | 170 Degree Super Wide Angle 6G Lens | B40 G-Sensor Night Vision Motion Detection: Amazon.ca: Electronics Spy Tec A118-C Capacitor Edition Full 1080P HD Video Car Dashboard Camera - No Internal Battery | Novatek NT96650 Chipset + Aptina AR0330 Lens | Stealth Dashboard Covert Mini Cam | 170 Degree Super Wide Angle 6G Lens | B40 G-Sensor Night Vision Motion Detection: Amazon.ca: Electronics

Has a good known seller and 1 year warranty. I wanted to try this stuff out before investing major money in Cameras.

After ordering I realized -I could've used my old cell Galaxy S3 as a dash cam too lol but it would have a very small viewing angle plus dash cam is very discreet.

ooo, I like yours too, it's super "discreet". maybe I'll exchange one of mine to yours. But yah, Galaxy S3 would be a "bit" bulky on the windshield.

My b40 died last night after 2 years of use. Just powers on, then off then on, etc.

Will have to order something new today. Then I will take pics of the install for everyone. I will be tapping off the mirror/windshield area for power.

B40 with battery.

This one is with capacitor.

Two years for a 100$ dash-cam is not bad ?

Ordered a 0826. Will be here Friday. Might have to wait a week to install it since I'm getting the windows tinted on the 11th. And they are tinting the windshield.
