Using the Front Wheel as the Spare

I had a flat, front tire one day and realized that the full-sized wheels will fit in the spare tire well along with the styrofoam insert. So I ordered an extra front wheel and tire and now use it in place of the temporary (50mph max) spare.

Over the Memorial Day weekend I ended up with another flat - but this time I was prepared with the full-sized spare and in a few minutes I was up and running in AMG style. Best flat tire experience I ever had, Lol.

Good info. Unfortunately I don't think this applies If you have the B&O. I'll have to double check, but I think I have a inflatable tire...

I have the B&O system. I guess I should have mentioned it. You can see part of the B&O system in some of these pictures. The tire nestles up against it.

How is the inflatable tire safe for the front or rear diff?

No idea, but considering it comes with the car, I'm hoping that they tested it.

My wife's Q5 also has one of those.

A little more info:

My tire shop guy looked up the tire diameters for both the front and rear Pirellis (OEM sizes) and the fronts are actually about ¼ inch larger. I was concerned that the rear wouldn't fit in the spare well but that's not an issue.

I don't know the diameter of the temp spare that comes with the car but I'm sure it was designed to work in the front or back.

Keep in mind that any tire diameter will lessen as it wears down so I assume the diffs can handle small diameter changes.

Bluesea, your profile shows your E63S is a wagon. We have the sedan with the B&O. Even the spacesaver spare will not fit in the spare tire well. The car is delivered with the spare tire on the trunk floor tied down to the 4 net anchor rings. The B&O subwoofer fills the spare tire well in the sedan.

Yes, I have the wagon. Thanks for pointing that out. I would still swap out the spare if space isn't an issue. It would sit a bit higher off the trunk floor than the temporary spare.

Here is my wagon with the optional plastic tray which is great for taking stuff out of the rear space to access the spare.
