Help with purchasing next car

Hey guys,

I've had my C300 for a few years and its about time I get a new Benz. I've been eyeing on a W212 but preferable a E550 or E63 but I'm not exactly sure what. What are some main points that I should be looking out for when purchasing a W212 (either E550 or E63). I found a few online that I might go see in the next few days, thoughts? Also besides that bigger engine (and price) in a E63, whats the difference between E550 VS E63 .

I've had both and berndV has had both, but many awesome opinions here

Both 2014

The e550 is wicked fast and smooth and quiet, the trans for most is butter smooth and it's just an easy car to drive and own. The airmatic suspension is solid

The e63S is a beast, louder and a bit rougher around the edges.. Unbelievably quick and still fairly fuel efficient on highway cruises, it embodies all the best of the e class series with the best power train Benz provides for a sedan

Can't go wrong with either .. The Amg is a bit more costly to maintain ... Brakes and tires being the biggest items; I would recommend buy one under factory warranty or cpo

Also the M5 is faster.... And can cure testicular cancer... And can pay for your kids' college ... And can mow your lawn

Big differences are motor (obviously) but the 550 is no slouch trust me. The brakes, and again like PeterUbers said, the E63 brakes are very costly compared to a 550. The amg has some styling (bumpers, exhaust) differences. The interior you get recaro seats, heated and cooled, suspension dampening adjustment, several driving modes, some other upgrades here and there. Ultimately, it comes down to the status. The E550 is plenty fast, and an amazing luxury car. But AMG will hold value a tad better with the years you are looking at. But again, you'll most likely pay that in maintenance. I jumped from the E350 AMG sport to the E63... never looked back. Just couldn't afford the E63 I wanted at the time. Good luck brother.

You're comparing really different cars (non turbo E63 vs turbo E550).
I was doing similar research 10 months ago when I knew I wanted an e63 but wasn't sure what year.
Fast forward to now and I love my 2012 (turbo v8).

2012+ will put a smile on your face EVERYTIME you drive your car.

I guess I should have said recaro style.. I don't think they are actually recaro. Was the W211 actual recaro?

I thought about the V8 Bi Turbo but its slightly out of my budget so that why I'm staying 2010-2011.


EDIT: so when I go to look at the cars, what should I be looking for, particular services? a particular piece or system? any red flags?

Also, is there just rumors about E63 and Head Bolts failing and causing the engine to breakdown? is that something I should look for?

2011 E63 no head bolt issues. 2010 e63 maybe head bolt issue.

E550 not as fast but a great car. Drive them all thoroughly and get the one you like best.

FYI. if maintenance cost concerns you then check the internet for the price of front Rotors for the E63 AMG.

Aren't 2010 and 2011 the same engine though? From what I've been seeing, 2012 + got the newer V8 Bi-Turbo Engine.

The headbolt issues went as far as halfway through production of 2010, that's why a 2011 may be safer on that front. Yes same engine, no the internals were slightly changed. No its not as common as the internet would like you to believe, but yes if it happens to you it will suck and cost a lot to fix

one of the cars you listed was 39,900 ... for that you can still find a 2012 e63 turbo

Thanks for the link. The only issue with that is that that car is in New York and well I'm from Washington state, which is like a 2,800 mile away. I prefer not to buy a car without actually seeing it in person.

Thank you guys for all the help, its really coming in handy. I most liekly will be looking at a few cars this weekend.

I'm hoping my car doesn't have that issue.. I should probably check the engine stamp and see if I'm in that category. Especially while it still has low miles.


But that recent 2012 looks like a good deal. Definitely see if the brakes and tires have been done. It would be at the very tail end of those components, but should have been taken care of within the last 10K or so.
