2014 E63 AMG S Race start (Video link)

Had fun playing with the GoPro this weekend:

otakki 08-15-2016 07:04 PM

I tried the function a few times this past weekend and it wasn't difficult to engage. I also tried burn-outs with the traction control turned off. Oh, I did these a few times near the tire shop where I had scheduled to have my already worn rears replaced...just so I can limp there at <5mph in case it completely wears through the tread. Yes, the cords and steel meshings were all poking through on both tires' inner edges when they took them off...Great fun!

Haven't seen this mode before. Is it a facelift-only option?

You havent seen race start mode? It's the RS position on your performance mode control.

All e63's have this mode I believe. I have 2011 and have it. And I am fairly certain it is on all newer models. Check your owner manual.

Good luck!

how long can you hold the brake down in race mode?

I think it's something like 30 seconds before race start shuts off and you have to start over.

Not sure if it is the same for cars with M157 engines. For those with M156 engines, RS is canceled if you do not release the brake pedal in 7 seconds. Side note, RS is canceled if you do not press the accelerator within 2 seconds.

Can you make a clip of all the inner setting to get this going

2014s with RS and yet to get it going.. I never see the RS light up in red like S+ M ...
Do we need to be in M and step on brake click rotate to RS and then go...
Maybe a MSD 2 step launch control like I have on my Mazda is needed.

BTW>... I notice if I step on the brake firm at a stop the HOLD light is on and the car is self brake mode.. step on the gas and go.. I like ....
Some one please make a detail vid with all the step show what is going on inside the car....

1. Car stopped in "Drive"
2. Brake depressed
3. Turn dial to "RS"
4. Use right shift paddle to confirm
5. Keep left foot on brake
6. Floor accelerator with right foot (car will maintain revs at 3500-4000 rpm)
7. Left foot off brake (keep the accelerator fully depressed or the car will exit Race Start mode)
8. Be careful of whiplash!

sunil517 08-22-2016 10:05 PM

disappointed...No luck

so I took her out..drove to bring oil temp out of the blue range. once at 190 I tried the RS...no luck.
The car just said HOLD and I floored it and it drove off and bucked and took off..stumble I should say...No launch control...
In drive and S, I came to a stop. Step on brake, click from S to RS Gas...

Do I have to press the AMG button or does the shocks need to be in Sport 2...
what about that Sport slip button..
This is really getting to me now...
Is there an advantage over foot breaking over RS.
If this was a simple car I would have installed my own 2 step launch control.
I am having more fun launching my mazda that this POS.

sunil517 08-22-2016 10:08 PM

Does the RS light up in red like C,S,S+...

I don't see the RS lighting up and anything on the cluster about race start and activate being displayed.

sunil517 08-22-2016 10:39 PM

more detail RS instructions....

Look for "RACE START" in the owners manuals. This is only on AMG vehicles.
RACE START can be activated when:
* the doors are closed
* the engine is running and it has reached an
operating temperature of approximately
176 F (80 C). This is the case when the
engine oil temperature in the multifunction
display stops flashing.
* SPORT handling mode is activated.
(Y page 62)
* the steering wheel is in the straight-ahead
position.
* the vehicle is stationary and the brake
pedal is depressed (left foot).
* the transmission is in position D.
Activating RACE START
* Depress the brake pedal with your left foot,
and keep it depressed.
* Turn the drive program selector clockwise
(Y page 144) until the RS lamp lights up.
The multifunction display shows the RACE
START Confirm: Paddle UP Cancel:
Paddle DOWN message.
i If the conditions for activation are no
longer fulfilled, RACE START is canceled.
The multifunction display shows the RACE
START canceled message.
* To cancel: pull the left steering wheel shift
paddle (Y page 145).
or
* To confirm: pull the right steering wheel
shift paddle (Y page 145).
The multifunction display shows the RACE
START available Depress
accelerator message.
* If you do not depress the accelerator
pedal fully within two seconds, RACE
START is canceled. The multifunction
display shows the RACE START not
possible See Operator's Manual message.
* Depress the accelerator pedal fully.
The engine speed increases to
approximately 4000 rpm.
The multifunction display shows the RACE
START Release brake to start message.
* If you do not release the brake pedal
within seven seconds, RACE START is
canceled. The multifunction display shows
the RACE START canceled message.
* Take your foot off the brake, but keep the
accelerator pedal depressed.
The vehicle pulls away at maximum
acceleration.
The multifunction display shows the RACE
START active message.
RACE START is deactivated when a speed of
approximately 30 mph (Canada: 50 km/h) is
reached. Drive program S+ is activated.
SPORT handling mode remains activated.
RACE START is deactivated immediately if
you release the accelerator pedal during
RACE START or if any of the activation
conditions are no longer fulfilled. The
multifunction display shows the RACE START
not possible See Operator's Manual message.
* If RACE START is used repeatedly within
a short period of time, it is only available
again after the vehicle has been driven a
certain distance.

Member suggest Sport S+ and foot brake it the best way.
RS is just a cool factor with the sound.. that is all.... I just want to have this RS work once for me,once is all I ask for....

Need to have traction control off

I don't think so... at least with the '14 E63. I never turned traction control off when initiating race start.

The manual makes it seem complicated, but it's actually a fairly simple process to initiate. I probably did about 7-8 back-to-back race start runs to capture the video in my clip above.

sunil517 08-23-2016 11:22 AM

AG6 I will try with traction off..

A few others have that off and was able to get it going.

Does the RS light up in red as the C S S+ does when you rotate the dial.
I never see my RS in red.

Has to be in sport handling mode ... That's a traction control change

This. Sport handling mode (the setting that reduces traction control interference, but does not turn it off). Steering wheel straight, brake pedal depressed firmly. Turn dial to RS.

Hopefully you get to experience it soon; it's certainly fun to play around with.:)

Thanks! It's a GoPro Hero 4 Silver with a Joby suction mount with articulating arm.

It won't work otherwise. It puts it into sport mode

Yup. To clarify for the group, this button has three settings:

- normal (don't push it)
- sport (push it once to lessen traction control interference)......use this for RS
- hold it down for few seconds(turn traction control completely off)....don't use this for RS
