Clunky/Slow Transmission? Try getting it adapted!

Now that we are way off topic I have Di2 DA Gen one....and it has been amazing on all kinds of terrain. We have some of the worst rods on the planet here...

Interesting, I have both and find that the DA in cobbles and I have to time the gear changing so I not end up coming of the ring. I was thinking that tension might be the reason. I have been at a couple of Paris-Roubaix and noticed that they use a longer arm than the DA but shorter than the Ultegra. It would be good to hear why but could not get a mechanic to explain.

So I didn't do measurements or anything, but I think what felt the most drastic to me was the basic shifting speed in both comfort and Sport at "normal driving" RPM. WOT feels the same, but I think that you'll notice the biggest improvements from not racing if I'm honest.
Everything used to feel laggy and awkward in parking lots at low speeds (you can see me whining about it in my car delivery thread haha).
the 100 millisecond WOT shift feels just as fast as it used to pre-adaption to me anyway.
Essentially, the adaption makes the car feel like a good automatic as opposed to a garbage one with a mind of its own that shifts like a 16 year old learning to downshift.
There is absolutely still the annoying delay between clicking paddle and shift happening in manual mode(I don't think there is much to do about that), so I think it's honestly better in Sport mode than M.

Thank you for the review, very interesting.
I agree driving in sport mode is better than M because of that shift delay from the paddle. To clarify, it's sport+ that feels like it shifts the fastest, noticeably faster than regular sport (s) mode.
in c/s/s+ it seems smooth to me in normal driving, nothing really feels clunky or off about it, but I am EC tuned so that may have a lot to do with it.

I wonder if the process is something like this?
https://youtu.be/zmk_XW3GRIY
https://youtu.be/zmk_XW3GRIY
1) Measure dead center alignment in questionable gears in cold, preferably 15 degrees C
2)Measure dead center alignment questionable gears in operating temp, around 75 degrees C higher than (1) or about 90 degrees C
3) Measure dead center alignment questionable gears in hot operating temp preferably about 90 degrees C higher than (2) or about 180 degrees C
4) Your video.
It is worth to mention that what the process tries to achieve is to contract and expand the gears to the maximum. From this "adaptation" the transmission gathers 4 reference points from where to make an accurate interpolation across the all the temperature range.
All steps are done in a similar facility and way in the diagnostics app as your video.
Main unit actually adjusts the gear alignment based on the current operating temperature. Thus these reference points are critical for a smooth shifting.

i asked MB chicago to check that a couple weeks ago when i took the car in to fix the suspension groaning sound and they said was nothing wrong with the trans/MCT so nothing done on that.
its definitely noticeable on mine how the trans clunks and jumps when decelerating at slow speeds and when accelerating from very slow speeds (gears 1-3 specifically). thx

Peter - hey so did your dealer do the transmission re-adaptation? any improvement? sorry if i missed your updated on this but didnt see one.

The dealer did not... i actually didnt want them to do anything because I'm enjoying my transmissions behavior currently and don't want to ruin a good thing

Where do you disconnect the secondary battery? Just so I know for the future.

i have done the "ECU reset" or whatever people refer it to and not sure its made much difference...on my old C32 it definitely did make a difference with seemingly better throttle response.
perhaps my problem is that i've been driving in C mode primarily since i live downtown chicago and for like 3 weeks have been doing all local short drives and not been able to get the car out and open it up WOT on the highway... car needs to get out and run a bit i think

thanks Peter... so no dealer trip for the adaptation thing, but what did you do to improve your trans behavior?? wouldnt want to ruin a good thing either, but i am not yet at at "good thing" with the trans which i think C mode really exacerbates

I've never really had anything wrong with this cars transmission it's always been smooth, occasionally if i forget you can just stomp on it from a quick stop I'll get the jerkiness as it accelerates initially but my foot-brain has adapted to driving it and I don't therefore get that issue
if you're still having issues I would absolutely take it in to get it adapted -- it can't hurt

I brought up and documented the process in a previous thread.
AJS started a new and clear thread so people can search.
Go to the dealer reproduce the issue, the dealer will do
a) a wet clutch adaptation (this addresses jerkiness and speed)
b) a gear adaptation (this addresses gear alignment and clunkiness)
C) a combination of A and B if your car needs it.

I'm not sure what the fix is for the throttle/trans, but All I can say is something really sucks with this car when decelararing at very low speeds and then trying to accelerate.
I tried to test this today going by 30 mph down to 5 and then accelerating at low speed and after pressing the car pedal takes 1/2 second or more to respond to any acceleration. Literally nothing happens at first press of the pedal.
I'd like to go test drive an RS7 and see what that experience is like.
Love this car car and if a tune fixes this low speed throttle response situation then I will go get that done asap.

Dropped my car off on Tuesday because in the morning times I would have issues with transmission - jerking and just acting up. Thought they would just do the software update but SA said it's something else. Let's see what they say is the issue is.

It is important to keep in mind that your MCT (2014-15) hardware is slightly different than mid and late 2016 production year and that the software is not compatible-interchangeable between 2014-15 and 2016.
I still believe that the 2016 MTC is at least as good as the DTC I had in my late production 2016 GTs, but what do I know right
Nothing short of amazing improvement after the adaptation in my 2015 and 2016 wagons.
