You said you saw weistec tune gain ~30whp with 93 vs 91 (their claim is closer to 40whp). So my reply was to that "alternative fact" to share my experience specifically with regards to that claim. I asked Weistec to to upgrade my tune to 93 based on the same thing you saw, but was told it wouldn't make a difference.

On my current setup there is 103bhp difference between 93 and 100 tune so I agree in general 20-30hp can be expected for 91 vs 93 tune.

what about when comparing 91 vs 93/94 (CAD) with an off the shelf tune?

would a shelf tune from weistec,EC, renntech auto adjust timing with 94 octane to produce 20-30whp more than with 91 octane?

EC never told me that the tune was made for 94, seems to imply like it won't make a difference but I'm pretty sure with higher octane the car feels faster than with 91.

I think if the tune for 93 is an aggressive one where the ECU is occasionally pulling timing (knock retard) or pulling boost psi then the 94 would benefit. If there is no knock sensor activity at all on 93 then in theory 94 should not help.

It would be interesting and probably quite useful to be able to monitor our cars knock sensors.

Stupid question but could you buy a cheap ob2 reader to monitor the knock? Does that work

most do not have knock monitoring ability... alternatively you can look at throttle application and corrosponding timing pull to guestimate knock

also apps like torque have knock monitor add-on, However torque does not actually measure knock directly....It looks at timing throttle ect and runs some algorithm to estimate knock probably looking for rate of change of timing advance..... so just a more scientific version of the guestimating based of looking at logs for unexplained timing pulled

i tested that with my 2005 Pontiac Sunfire. Gas cap says to put 87 in there.. I tried 87, 91, and 94 and they detect multiple knock events even on 94. There were perhaps more of them on 87 and 91 but it's hard to know because sometimes you get more sometimes you get less so difficult to make a comparison. If anyone else has had better luck I would like to hear their experience as well with torque "knock detector"
