I have been talking to a couple tuning companies and they are claiming around 120-140 HP increase with DP and a tune. More increase with a tune.

I am a bit skeptical about it, what are they doing different that AMG could not do to make the car quicker? There must be some kind of trade off or compromise for this increase. Excessive wear? Other issues down the road?

I am not sure that they are doing anything different. I feel that all of these brands look at tuning as marketing. What benchmarks can they provide and still have a product lifecycle. In the case of AMG this is likely why we some times see a Black Series, right as an engine or body style is going away. Now they do not have to worry about future incremental improvements so they market 100% of the hardwares potential.

I think it is a combination of a number things. To a certain extent, AMG (and even their competitors) probably over-engineer the engines to handle much more power than the stock power. But the manufacturers have other contstraints. They need to meet noise and emissions pollution standards as well as gas mileage standards. So they leave some untapped potential by restricting exhaust and overall engine output to meet these regulated standards.

But with forced induction cars there is more left on the table because the manufacturers want the turbos/superchargers to operate within the optimal thermal efficiency. When aftermarket tunes/parts increase the boost, they are usually pushing outside that range and likely will heat soak the engine much quicker if the cooling systems are not upgraded as well. Will increasing the boost create more stress on the engine and driveline components. Absolutely! But you can probably mitigate some of that additional wear/stress with more frequent oil/fluid changes than what the manufacturer recommends.
