2016 E63s Wagon - CCB & CF package
E63 Wagon vs Sedan? What are the real differences?

What are the not-so-obvious differences between the 2012/2013 wagon and sedan E63's?

1. Which is heaver?
2. Is the rear suspension the same?
3. Are any wagon parts hard to get and may be a long lead-time from dealer?
4. Does the wagon hold value better?
5. Any reasons to get the common sedan rather than the more rare wagon?

Thanks guys!

1. The wagon;
2. Yes;
3. My dealer doesn't stock rear wiper blades;
4. Yes, see this: https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...3-wagons.html;
5. It's easier to find a sedan. Beyond that, it's personal preference.

5. The sedan performance is better than a wagon; the wagon likely gives better aural feedback from the exhaust compared to the sedan thanks to the open wagon design; to achieve this in sedan you need to fold the rear seat back down or open the pass through door

How much better performance? In what sense? Acceleration or cornering?

Also, does anyone know actual weight difference?

I test drove a 2014 E63 S sedan locally before I bought my 2014 E63 S Wagon. On the street any performance difference is negligible.

You buy the wagon if you want a wagon and the sedan if you want a sedan. Wagons hold their value better because of the wagon cognoscenti (cult) and the lower number imported into the states, the price difference was significant when I was shopping.

The cargo capacity, air suspension, and low deck height are great for utility. This weekend I picked up a Makita MAC2400 air compressor and a bunch of tools from a friend and threw them all in the back of the wagon with room to spare. Strapped the compressor down with a pair of stratchits and didn't think about it again until I had to unload it. I think the rear cargo area in the s212 wagon may be slightly larger than the GLE. The rear glass does slope in so you don't get full height all the way back but it's huge.

Performance-wise, there is a difference. Sedans will trap higher (by several mph) and have better ET than wagons, generally speaking. This translates into a faster street car as well. Does the difference matter? Up to the owner for sure.

If you want a wagon, grab a wagon. If I were in the market for this type of car at the moment, I'd have a tough time deciding.

a tune will likely narrow that gap as well ...

Actually I meant equally modded or equally stock, sedan is faster. Matters not to me, but I've seen it play out on the track and street. Reporting my experience.

The best or nothing
1. Wagon is heavier if equipped with pano roof, which I believe is a standard option in the US.

Best performer is sedan with sunroof, not pano

its the most rigid and quickest

not sure if ccb are lighter

i think forged rims are lightest

Just to be clear, we're talking about a 4600+ pound vehicle with a couple cow's worth of leather on the inside right?

The subwoofer layout in the wagon is different as well. Its an actual enclosure and a normal round subwoofer instead of the weird infinite baffle oval subwoofer in the sedan.

They're 31 pounds lighter than the standard brakes.

I read somewhere the extra weight in the back helps with the weight distribution in the wagon. I threw it in some canyons corners this weekend and was very amazed how neutral it was. I only encountered one super tight corner where it pushed the front.

lol.

in reality, the biggest diffs are the most obvs ones: wagon holds more isht, including its value.

e63 leased returned sedans after 3Y is worth something like 60% of original MSRP.

Nah. It's a matter of value. What does the op value most? He asked for info. We're all providing data. He/she will determine what the biggest differences are. You and I clearly value different things, which is totally cool.

2016 E63s Wagon - CCB & CF package
I really love the idea of a very fast wagon, maybe its the european in me. I was in my buddies Carrera last weekend and we got smoked by a pre-facelift E63 wagon. It was brown too, which ive never seen before. It was just so damn cool.

Im coming out of a modded E55 so i will want something better/faster. And if it can be a wagon, that much better! Though it does suck (a teeny bit) to hear that the sedan is actually faster, but i guess you cant have it all. I will definitely tune it, so hopefully that will close the gap some.

just my 2c ... my advice would be to not get too carried away with the numbers... acceleration deltas of a few tenths of a second are not very noticeable by a human being, certainly not over a 4 second run... in addition, temperature, humidity, air density variations for anything that uses an air compressor will likely adjust performance far more that any paper difference between say the E63 wagon and the sedan... in addition, top end differences are purely academic as these things both approach 200 miles an hour... in short, the two determining factors are likely looks and utility as performance is practically speaking identical

Boom. That's absolutely correct. The performance delta between the two is statistically insignificant.

The brown is cool! Saw one here in Florida and really liked it.
