Trans Won’t Revert to Automatic Mode

2010 E63. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE ANSWER. THX: Here’s example; riding in “C” mode, automatic, in 7th gear. I’m in AMG display mode so the “7” is in big display. I use downshift paddle to slow car, say down to 4th gear. I see big numbers drop 7-6-5-4. I then use brakes to stop car (not paddles). See display go from 4-3-2. Sitting at light in 2, which is normal. But on bottom of display, it still says D4. Light changes and I go. I don’t touch paddles. Car automatically upshifts 2-3-4 BUT WON’T UPSHIFT PAST 4. BOTTOM DISPLAY STILL SAYS D4. I CAN DRIVE ALL DAY. STOPPING AND STARTING AND CAR WON’T UPSHIFT BEYOND 4TH GEAR. ONLY WAY I CAN GET PAST 4TH IS MANUALLY UPSHIFT OR TO SQUEEZE AND HOLD UPSHIFT PADDLE TO REVERT TO AUTOMATIC MODE. FOR FOUR YEARS I OWNED CAR IT USED TO REVERT TO AUTOMATIC IF YOU DIDN’T TOUCH THE PADDLES FOR A MOMENT OR TWO. NOW IT DOESN’T. Dealer unsure if it’s broken!! Wants me to wait for day another 2010 E63 shows up so he can drive it for comparison, like they can’t reach out to a tech guru somewhere. WHAT SAY YOU?

My 2014 will revert to auto and your dealer is wrong

try a simple tcu reset AND overnight negative terminal pull and see if this solves the problem

http://www.mercedesmedic.com/reset-m...-instructions/

try the tcu reset first

then if that doesn't work try the negative battery terminal pull

I never drive in comfort mode but in S or S+ my 2012 will stay in D4 and not go into auto unless I hold the upshift paddle. And to be honest, thank god! I hate the way this car drives and short shifts when in full auto and becomes laggy and sluggish.

My dealer agrees that a 2014 AMG will revert to auto, especially after I drove one and showed him. He is not convinced that a 2010 will do so. Apparently there is some difference in specs. Based on my conversation with dealer, I'm particularly interested in 2010-2012 AMGs.

I have a 2012 and it does the same thing. I either hold the paddle to get back to full auto or pull the paddle until the D appears. Its not broken thats just the way it is.

So I have BOTH a 2011 and a 2015. My 2011 shifts great! Never a complaint. It will NEVER revert to auto while a paddle has been put into play unless I hold down the up paddle. However, my 2015 does fall into auto after about 5 to 10 seconds if I don't touch the paddles. I find this very annoying. I just had a SW update to the TCU on the 15 from the dealer and it's a bit better. Holds the gear a bit longer before it dumps into auto. If I could could swap the trans in my 2011 into the 15, I would be very happy!

That's all the data I have here.

Why not just put it in Manual mode and be done with it
